About the Position Mississippi Emergency Management is recruiting for a Time-Limited/ Non-State Service Position as an Emergency Management Officer I/ Individual Assistance Specialist. Being an Individual Assistance Specialist requires compassion, empathy, patience, and the ability to communicate effectively with individuals impacted by a disaster. This position is subject to recall around the clock for emergency management operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official duty station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee’s official position description. Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks at a time), with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically austere and operationally challenging conditions. This position also requires overnight lodging and work, including developing plans and implementing programs for State, Local, and Federal entities. The duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Serving as a liaison between Federal, State, and Local entities that provide disaster assistance to individuals and households during a declared or nondeclared incident.
  • Assisting the Office of Housing and Individual Assistance Bureaus with implementing federal and state programs and conducting case management on individuals due to a state disaster or emergency evacuation declared by the Governor.
  • Deploying to impacted counties to conduct on-site validations of homes and businesses after a disaster with local, and federal partners.
  • Conducting on-site inspections of pre-identified Disaster Recovery Centers throughout assigned districts in Mississippi.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with Emergency Management Directors, in assigned districts on recovery efforts and state and federal programs.
  • Collaborating with faith base and nonprofit organizations and stakeholders to ensure effective coordination and communication of resources during a declared or nondeclared disasters.
  • Developing and editing Individual Assistance Bureau disaster-specific plans and conducting disaster-related training courses to local and state partners.

g., Board of Supervisors, nonprofit organizations, and federal partners). This position is with the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA).
