JOB SUMMARY

The College of Science operates under a shared services model, providing financial support across departments, schools, the dean’s office, and research centers. The Business Officer plays a key role on the College of Science leadership team, overseeing day-to-day financial operations and supporting strategic planning. Reporting to the Chief Business & Operations Officer (CBOO), this position is responsible for financial planning, budget management, compliance, and process improvement. Other duties as assigned.

JOB DUTIES

30%•Essential•

FINANCIAL ANALYSIS & PLANNING

Collaborates with the CBOO in the preparation and submission of the college’s annual operating budget. Prepares and presents financial reports and multi-year financial plans to college leadership. Advises unit leaders on the allocation and availability of funds to support strategic goals. Oversees college-wide financial commitments, including start-up packages, personnel expenses, and cost-sharing agreements. Conducts financial data analysis and forecasting to inform long-range planning and strategic decisions. Prepares revenue projections and expenditure analyses for self-supporting accounts; maintains and audits these accounts. Develops financial performance metrics and reporting systems to guide data-informed decisions. Collects, validates, and ensures the accuracy of financial data for internal and external reporting. Promotes transparency regarding expenses and net revenue for non-traditional academic programs (e.g., online, summer, and master’s programs). 30%•Essential•

LEADERSHIP & TEAM MANAGEMENT

Supervises and mentors the college’s financial staff (Financial Analyst & AP&R teams) providing leadership and guidance. Leads the recruitment, onboarding, and professional development of financial team members. Develops and implements best practices and training programs to promote operational efficiency. Oversees the development and execution of financial plans for E&G and gift/endowment funds (excluding research). Establishes and updates financial policies for the college to ensure regulatory compliance and procedural consistency. Conducts internal audits to verify compliance with college, university, state, and federal regulations. 30%•Essential•

ACCOUNTING & BUDGET MANAGEMENT

Manages the start-up commitment process and ensures timely leadership review. Approves and enters budget amendments, journal entries, and payroll corrections. Oversees the GS61 stipend/assistantship data entry in coordination with faculty and staff. Monitors and reconciles financial transactions, resolves discrepancies, and ensures compliance with financial reporting standards. Reviews and approves security access to financial and HR systems. Manages college billing rate review and coordinates submission. Reviews and approves Clemson University Foundation (CUF) vouchers and serves as college liaison to CUF for all gift funding matters. Works with HR contacts to manage summer pay for 9-month faculty, ensuring funding and forms are accurate and complete. 10%•Essential•

STRATEGIC INITIATIVES & SPECIAL PROJECTS

Evaluates and enhances financial and operational processes to drive continuous improvement. Contributes to strategic projects and business case development for new revenue-generating programs. Represents the College of Science on university committees and task forces, including the Campus Business Officers Group. Interprets and disseminates university policy and procedural updates to relevant college personnel. Supports a culture of operational excellence and informed decision-making.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education•Bachelor’s Degree with multiple accounting courses and professional experience directing professional accounting, auditing, banking or finance employees. Work Experience 1+ years

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS

Education•Master’s Degree•Business or Accounting Work Experience 3+ years related work experience, including PeopleSoft and Workday operating systems

Anticipated Salary Range:

$78,500•$105,000 Salary is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate’s previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson’s compensation guidelines.

ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL LEVEL

Normal Operations Required to follow emergency facility closure directives, and not normally expected work on-site during emergency situations.
