N/A II. PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION

Works from requisitions, drawings, specifications and job cards. Purchase or approve all materials and supplies as needed for manufacturing parts and all other shop and office supplies, excluding capital equipment with proper cost and inventory controls.

III. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Essential Functions
• 1) Locates sources of supply and check’s reliability of suppliers; obtains quotations and makes comparisons for best prices. Must use form 271.
• 2) Consults appropriate people/departments when substitutions may be advantageous or when problems arise.
• 3) Controls material inventory; runs material shortage report.
• 4) Responsible for fiscal year inventory.
• 5) Purchases materials needed for jobs and stock; issue P.O.’s; works with shear operators regarding material received and material needed.
• 6) Expedites open P.O.’s when necessary.
• 7) Works hard negotiating material pricing.
• 8) Approves and codes all purchases; reviews all requisitions and all invoices.
• 9) Posts shear tickets, return to stock.
• 10) Receives material packing slips in computer.
• 11) Keeps O.T.D of vendors & suppliers, and a daily material shortage report.
• 12)Receives and keeps materials purchased in the system.

IV. REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS

a .

Knowledge :

High school diploma or equivalent necessary; Business degree a plus. b .

Experience :

Minimum one year purchasing experience required, preferably in the metal fabrication industry (or manufacturing as a minimum). Experience with inventory control and data entry experience required. c.

Skills/Aptitude :

Key-boarding skills; customer-oriented, assertive, organized, accurate, detailed-oriented, flexible in making demands and establishing priorities; effective time management skills, team-player/willing to do whatever is needed to help ensure smooth flow of office work process

V. WORKING CONDITIONS

Office environment; possible overtime. Trips into the shop are necessary at times and safety protection will be required.

VI. LEVEL

 Strong Negotiation Skills They should be able to secure the best prices and terms without compromising on quality or timelines.  Industry Knowledge Familiarity with metal types, fabrication processes, and supplier capabilities is essential for making informed purchasing decisions.  Attention to Detail Precision matters—especially when ordering materials that must meet exact specifications.  Analytical Thinking A good purchaser can assess vendor performance, compare bids, and forecast material needs based on production schedules.  Communication & Collaboration They’ll need to coordinate with engineers, production teams, and suppliers—so clear, proactive communication is a must.  Integrity & Accountability Trustworthiness is vital when handling budgets, contracts, and supplier relationships.  Adaptability The metal fabrication industry can be fast-paced and unpredictable. A strong purchaser stays calm under pressure and adjusts quickly to changes in demand or supply chain disruptions.  Tech Savvy Experience with procurement software, ERP systems, and digital inventory tools is a big plus.
