We’re searching for a Chief Operating Officer (COO) who has strong leadership skills and the ability to approach business with a creative point of view. The COO will lead various key functions of the organization. The ideal candidate has extensive experience within the nonprofit industry, preferably having worked their way up to an executive role. We believe this trajectory helps a person develop a unique mix of business and management expertise, plus proficiency with the practices, policies, and procedures of our industry. The COO will be responsible for overseeing all operational aspects of the organization, working closely with, and report directly to, the CEO to develop and implement strategies that align with the company’s goals and objectives. The COO will partner closely with other members of the Executive Team, and manage teams across various functions, including marketing & communications, information technology and operations. The position will be charged with ensuring organizational efficiency, operational excellence, and strategic alignment across all departments. This role will be critical to advancing the organization’s mission while maintaining operational excellence and sustainability. Objectives Collaborate with CEO in setting and driving organizational vision and operations strategy
Translate strategy into actionable steps for growth, implementing organization-wide goal setting, performance management, and annual operations planning
Oversee company operations, building a highly inclusive culture that ensures team members can thrive and that organizational goals are met
Ensure compliance with national and local business regulations, and take appropriate action when necessary Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership & Planning Partner with the CEO and Executive Leadership Team to develop and implement strategic plans and organizational goals
Lead operational planning and processes and ensure alignment between strategic objectives and day to day operations
Identify opportunities for organizational growth, efficiency improvements, and innovation
Monitor key performance indicators and metrics to assess organizational health and progress to strategic goals and KPIs Operations Management Oversee daily operations across all departments and programs
Develop, implement, and monitor operational policies, procedures, and systems
Ensure compliance with all federal, state and local regulations affecting nonprofit operations.
Lead organizational risk management and quality assurance initiatives
Manage vendor relationships and strategic partnerships
Manage real estate portfolio and relationship with property managers
Develop and lead efforts to oversee historical archives and legacy materials Marketing & Communications Oversee the development and execution of comprehensive marketing and communications strategies aligned with organizational mission and goals
Oversee brand management, messaging consistency, and visual identity across all channels and touchpoints
Analyze marketing performance metrics and ROI to optimize strategies and resource allocation Financial Management & Support Collaborate with the Finance team and Chief Financial Officer on budget development, operational resource planning, productivity analysis and expense management
Provide high level oversight of budgets under purview with forecasting, expense management, and strategic workforce planning
Support fundraising and future development efforts by leveraging systems and continuously improving processes to further advance the business and position it for operational growth Technology & Systems Management Oversee information technology infrastructure and systems
Lead digital transformation initiatives to improve efficiency and service delivery
Ensure data security, privacy compliance and technology governance
Evaluate and implement new technologies to support mission and fundraising delivery Board and Stakeholder Relations Support board governance through preparation of reports and presentations
Serve as a key liaison between staff and board committees
Represent the organizations at conferences, meetings, and external events Qualifications Master’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Nonprofit Management, or related field
Five or more years of experience in executive leadership roles
Minimum 15 years of management experience, preferably in nonprofit sector
Demonstrated experience in operations management, strategic planning, and organizational development
Strong financial management and budgeting experience
Knowledge of nonprofit governance, compliance, and regulatory requirements
Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and complex projects
Experience with board relations and stakeholder management
