Serves as
Public Safety Dispatcher:
receives calls by telephone or radio; determines the nature and seriousness of the situation and obtains the necessary information from caller(s); dispatches the appropriate service to the scene; transmits request to the field units giving the location and nature of the call to the appropriate unit within the area or to the nearest available unit; provides additional information to field units dispatched to answer calls; monitors field unit radio reports and requests for information or assistance from field units responding to calls; maintains a computer log of field unit locations at all time, updating continually; maintains records/logs of all messages received and/or transmitted; receives and enters into the computer dispatch times for field units; takes requests for, retrieves from the computer, and transmits to appropriate field unit, information pertaining to warrants, license plates, and driver’s licenses; maintains records of any services or streets that are out of service, reporting to correct department; receives and transmits message to other state public safety agencies via radio or telephone; assists in maintaining current lists of hospitals, medical services, apartment dwellings, shopping centers, and streets in the City; receives and provides information regarding City services after regular business hours, notifying employees scheduled to be on call of situations requiring a response.
Supervision:
monitors/reviews work of Public Safety Dispatchers to ensure performance standards are met and ensures that correct information is dispatched and correct procedures followed; ensures proper function of necessary dispatch equipment and technology; writes reports of problems and/or unusual situations that arise during shift.
Administrative Duties:
assists the Emergency Services Director and Deputy Coordinator with any special assignments; monitors and approves time and attendance records; ensures appropriate staffing levels; monitors National Weather Service and direct phone lines; assists with training new operators in correct dispatching procedures and operation of equipment; performs CAD/radio updates; assists with Freedom of Information Act requests; documents Public Safety Dispatcher performance.
Communications Equipment Testing:
tests or supervises the testing of computers, generators, emergency warning systems, and alarm systems regularly; tests or supervises the testing of weather alerting system; tests or supervises the testing of telephone system, paging systems, portable and vehicle radios daily; reports any malfunction of equipment to appropriate persons; keeps records of maintenance.
Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent and 5 years directly related experience as a public safety dispatcher with a mid to large-sized communications center. Must pass a Public Safety Dispatcher test.
ACIC Level 1 certification or the ability to obtain within 60 days. Lead, training, tactical, supervisory, and/or administrative experience preferred.
Motorola phone system experience. Southern Software CAD experience preferred. A Class D driver’s license and good driving record are required and must be maintained throughout employment.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The supervisor provides continuing or individual assignments by indicating generally what is to be done, limitations, quality and quantity expected, deadlines, and priority of assignments. The supervisor provides additional, specific instructions for new, difficult, or unusual assignments including suggested work methods or advice on source material available. The employee uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently without specific instruction, but refers deviations, problems, and unfamiliar situations not covered by instructions to the supervisor for decision or help. The supervisor reviews some of the work, with more review of difficult or unfamiliar assignments.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
The employee provides task supervision for 5 or more Public Safety Dispatchers. COMPLEXITY
The work includes various duties involving different and unrelated processes and methods; the decision regarding what needs to be done depends upon the analysis of the subject, phase, or issues involved in each assignment, and the chosen course of action may have to be selected from many alternatives; the work involves conditions and elements that much be identified and analyzed to discern interrelationships.
GUIDELINES
A number of specific guidelines are available; judgment is used in locating and selecting the most appropriate guidelines; minor deviations can be made in specific cases; significant deviations are referred to the supervisor. The employee rarely makes any decisions that affect persons or situations beyond the scope of his/her job.
