We are currently seeking an experienced and highly organized Lead Logistics/Dispatch Manager to join our logistics team and oversee dispatch operations and fleet performance.
Position Summary:
The Lead Dispatch Manager is responsible for managing all aspects of daily trucking operations, including scheduling, route planning, fleet maintenance coordination, driver supervision, and ensuring DOT compliance. This leadership role is critical to the smooth and efficient movement of materials to and from customer sites, processing yards, and mill partners.
Key Responsibilities:
Dispatch & Routing Operations:
Oversee and coordinate daily dispatch operations for company trucks and contracted haulers. Create, adjust, and communicate truck schedules to maximize operational efficiency. Plan routes that optimize fuel usage, driver time, and delivery schedules. Respond promptly to schedule changes, delays, breakdowns, or other issues.
Driver & Team Supervision:
Supervise a team of company drivers and dispatch support staff. Communicate assignments clearly and consistently. Monitor driver performance, hours of service, and adherence to safety standards. Support driver onboarding, training, and ongoing compliance.
Fleet & Equipment Management:
Manage the fleet of trucks, trailers, and related equipment, ensuring all assets are maintained and operational. Coordinate preventive maintenance and repair schedules with the maintenance department or third-party providers. Monitor vehicle inspections, registrations, and certifications.
Compliance & Safety:
Ensure DOT and FMCSA compliance, including ELD logs, hours-of-service (HOS), driver qualification files, and vehicle documentation. Maintain accurate records of dispatch logs, maintenance records, and fuel usage. Work with safety teams to investigate and resolve accidents or violations.
Customer Service & Communication:
Serve as a communication hub between the operations team, drivers, yard staff, customers, and vendors. Address and resolve any service issues related to pickups, deliveries, or delays. Foster strong relationships with internal departments and external clients.
Reporting & Continuous Improvement:
Track and report on dispatch metrics such as delivery times, idle time, fuel efficiency, and route performance. Implement technologies or systems to improve dispatching, tracking, and reporting functions. Participate in budgeting, cost control, and efficiency initiatives for the logistics department.
Required Qualifications:
5+ years of experience in dispatch management, trucking logistics, or transportation coordination—preferably in recycling, scrap metal, construction, or industrial environments. Proven experience in managing a fleet and supervising CDL drivers. Strong knowledge of DOT regulations and fleet safety standards. Proficiency in dispatch and logistics software (e.g., TMS systems, GPS tracking tools). CDL A preferred, not required. Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills. Ability to remain calm under pressure and adapt to dynamic schedules. High school diploma or GED required; additional logistics, business, or transportation certifications are a plus.
Preferred Attributes:
Familiarity with metal recycling operations, commodities logistics, or heavy equipment. Ability to work early mornings or extended hours to meet operational demands. Workweek is 65 hours; 6a-6pm M-F ad 7a-12pm Sat.
