The Communications Officer is responsible for collecting information via telephone, radio, or in person and being able to relay in a clear and concise manner that information. Operation of the CAD system to input information and track units progress throughout a calls’ evolution is a critical aspect of the Communications Officer’s job. Communicating well with other agencies in real-time, joint or mutual aid emergencies, is a valuable asset for many calls. Both emergent and non-emergent calls will be dispatched with professionalism and clarity.

Supervisor:
Senior Communications Officer or Shift Supervisor Essential Job Functions:

1. Day to day emergent and non-emergent dispatch operations as follows: a. Answer/Operate all telephones i. Answer all non-emergency phone lines in two rings or less and always remain professional, courteous and follow SOP’s. ii. Operate all telephone functions following SOP’s iii. Have knowledge of all Gold Cross EMS station locations and Columbia County Fire station locations as well as the Gold Cross EMS response areas for each unit. b. Dispatch/Monitor All Emergency Services i. Closely monitor radio or radios assigned to, regardless of whether traffic is directed to dispatch or not. ii. Monitor units at all times for locations and timely completion of calls. iii. Dispatchers should be able to at any time verbally tell any management personnel where a unit is located at, without having to pause to look at the CAD or unit status board. c. Operate/Monitor CAD i. Operate CAD, following all SOP’s ii. Enter and monitor all routine traffic. iii. Access and use all approved functions of the CAD. d. Operate/Monitor Radios and Phones i. Operate and monitor all radio functions following all SOP’s ii. Operate all phone systems following all SOP’s e. Operate/Monitor Other Office Equipment i. Operate/monitor copy/fax machine ii. Operate/monitor printers iii. Operate/monitor the non-emergency call requests via internet iv. Operate/monitor all back-up equipment v. Operate all consoles f. Perform End of Duty/Beginning of Duty Tasks/Other Duties i. Perform beginning duty tasks following SOP’s.

Examples are:

reading pass-on, arriving as policy dictates to receive pass-on early, clock in and out times correct. ii. Perform end duty tasks following SOP’s.

Examples are:

giving your relief information for pass-on, making sure all of your calls are completed and accurate, make sure all calls are in the proper cert level and response area, clean your work area and break areas, file all needed paperwork, clock out. iii. Perform any other job that needs to be done when it is deemed needed by the Director and when not performing on a call or radio. iv. Ensure that there is nothing left to do before they leave the shift. If there is work to do it is to be done before clocking out. 2. Communications Officers report directly to a Shift Supervisor or Senior Communications Officer. a. All Dispatchers will follow chain of command. b. Should any adverse action be required, the Shift Supervisor or Director of Communications will handle that action. c. There will always be a door open to the Director, but day to day issues should be directed to the shift supervisor when there is one in place.

Minimum Qualifications:

Valid Driver’s license High school diploma or GED Satisfactory background check Basic Life Support (CPR) certification Hazmat training Bloodborne pathogens training
