This position requires 100% onsite The Assistant Director for Dispatch and Transit Hub Operations is a strategic overseeing all dispatch and transit hub operations to ensure the timely assignment and dispatching of bus operators to meet scheduled service needs. This role manages a team of dispatcher/lead dispatchers and station supervisors/leads, coordinates daily staffing, ensures service reliability, and handles escalations that arise from operational disruptions. The Assistant Director works closely with other departments, including maintenance and operations, to ensure smooth transit services. This role requires strong leadership, operational oversight, and decision-making capabilities to manage the complexities of daily public transit dispatching.
Requirements:
Strategic Leadership Tasks Responsible for strategic oversight of the dispatch team, including Lead Dispatchers and Dispatchers, ensuring they are trained, supported, and operating effectively. Responsible for strategic oversight of the station supervisors and leads involved in smooth operations of various transit hubs Provide coaching, feedback, and performance evaluations to dispatch staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement. Schedule and assign shifts to dispatch staff, ensuring adequate coverage during peak service hours and special events.
Oversee Daily Dispatch Operations:
Oversight of daily dispatch activities, ensuring that all routes are properly staffed and buses are dispatched on time. Oversight of the efficient allocation of bus fleet to meet daily operational needs Monitor service performance and make adjustments as necessary to cover operator absences, mechanical issues, or unexpected events. Collaborate with Lead Dispatchers to resolve operational challenges and provide guidance on difficult or complex situations.
Service Reliability and Problem Resolution:
Ensure that all scheduled services are met, addressing last-minute changes or challenges that may impact service reliability. Handle escalations related to operator absences, route disruptions, or service interruptions, and ensure appropriate resources are deployed to resolve issues. Collaborate with road supervisors, maintenance teams, and other departments to manage operational issues, such as vehicle breakdowns or traffic disruptions.
Operational Planning and Coordination:
Develop and implement dispatch strategies to optimize the deployment of bus operators and minimize service disruptions. Coordinate with the operations and planning departments to align daily dispatch activities with broader service goals and upcoming events. Ensure appropriate communication channels with the dispatch team is informed of service changes, detours, special event planning, and any long-term scheduling needs.” Coordination with Maintenance and Operations to address schedule disruptions Oversight of the coordinate with the vehicle maintenance team to ensure buses are available and ready for service at all times. Data Management and Reporting:
Monitor key performance metrics related to dispatch operations, including on-time performance, operator attendance, and service reliability. Generate and review daily, weekly, and monthly reports to track performance, identify trends, and make recommendations for improvement. Oversight to ensure accurate and timely record-keeping of dispatch logs, operator assignments, absences, and service incidents. Training and Mentorship Develop training programs for new dispatchers, ensuring they are proficient in dispatch software, processes, and communication protocols. Provide ongoing training and development opportunities for dispatch staff to improve their skills and maintain high performance. Stay updated on industry best practices and technological advancements in dispatching and integrate improvements where appropriate. Resource Management Ensure that all dispatch operations are conducted in a cost-effective manner while maintaining service quality and reliability.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in transportation, logistics, business management, or a related field preferred. Equivalent experience in public transit or dispatch operations may be considered.
Experience:
5+ years of experience in public transit dispatching, transportation logistics, or a related field. 3+ years in a supervisory or management role, with experience leading teams and overseeing dispatch operations. Must have a CDL with Passenger Endorsement or the ability to gain and maintain within six (6) months of employment. Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid DOT card for the duration of employment.
