JOB SUMMARY:
Serves as dispatcher of police, fire and ambulance services in the operation of two-way radio and telephone; does related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Positions in this class are responsible for receiving and sending messages via radio and telephone. The work is performed in accordance with a standard routine; however, room for independent action and thought are necessary in emergency situations when a supervisor is not available or the volume of calls is too great to justify any type of delay. General supervision is received from the 911 Coordinator.
JOB FUNCTIONS
Receives emergency and nonemergency calls for police, fire, ambulance, probation, children services and other agencies; Dispatches the proper crew to the emergency or nonemergency scene vis two-way radio or telephone; Operates the police Clean computer terminal, entering and retrieving information; Processes all call cards for police, fire and ambulance calls; Tests equipment to ensure proper working condition; Dispatches all disaster drills and weather problems; Reads emergency operations books to upgrade present knowledges and skills. Performs other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Works indoors with limited work space, adequate lighting and ventilation, and fluctuation in temperatures; exposure to noise, disruptions, and stress; Subject to working on call or on an as-needed basis; travels as necessary.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have the ability to record, convey, and present information, explain procedures, and follow instructions; Must be able to sit for long periods of time with frequent periods of standing, walking, and occasional twisting, reaching, pulling, and pushing required for obtaining files, doing inspections or other job duties; Dexterity requirements range from simple to complex movements of fingers/hands, legs/feet, or torso to carry out job duties; Sedentary work with occasional lifting, 15-20 pounds; Must demonstrate emotional stability; Ability to cope with physical and mental stress of the position; Must be able to pay close attention to detail and concentrate on work; Ability to handle high pressure situations.
REQUIRED
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and
ABILITIES
Some knowledge of Federal and State regulations governing transmission by telephone and radio; some knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Bradford County Communications Center; some knowledge of office routines; some knowledge of the geography, highway and street system of the County and surrounding area; ability to speak distinctly. MINIMUM EXPERIENCE and
TRAINING
Completion of a standard high school course and preferably some work experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledges, skills and abilities.
