MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM
1. Possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger and School bus endorsements (preferred).
2. Thorough knowledge of school bus operating areas and school bus operations.
3. Ability to multi-task in highly dynamic environment
4. Ability to effectively employ technology, including two-way radios and computer software in support of dispatching activities.
5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may find appropriate and acceptable.
JOB SUMMARY
Manages the dispatch center during an 8-hour shift. Coordinates and controls execution of up to 170 school bus routes. Provides operational guidance and support to drivers via two-way radio and other media to ensure timely arrivals to pick up locations and timely departures from school dismissal points.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Manages the dispatch center
Organizes and maintains bus keys for in-service and out-of-service school buses.
Ensures bus-related forms are available upon request to drivers and monitors.
Maintains log of dispatch activities daily. Conveys that information to the dispatcher assigned to the next shift and supervisors accordingly.
Tracks attendance of drivers and monitors and provides that information to the Transportation Supervisors.
Coordinates with State Department of Education (SCDE) Bus Center and district mechanics on maintenance and other issues affecting operational capability of school buses.
Assigns appropriate buses to school bus routes based on student load size, SCDE routing criteria, direction of the applicable supervisor, and mechanical serviceability of buses.
Exercises immediate operational control of up to 180 school bus drivers
Issues proper keys to drivers for buses to be used on school bus routes and field trips.
Provides routing directions to drivers, as required.
Communicates essential information via radio to drivers on the road. This requires proficiency in the use of Edulog to ensure accuracy of delivery and route compliance with SCDE policy and regulation.
Assists drivers with school bus mechanical issues while on bus delivery routes.
Executes emergency action checklists to aid drivers through a variety of situations, including traffic accidents, student behavior issues, law enforcement actions, and safety issues.
Coordinates with transportation supervisors to ensure route coverage when assigned drivers or monitors cannot perform duties for any reason.
Communicates relevant information regarding school bus operations.
Communicates relevant school bus information to schools, parents, and superiors, as required.
Notifies schools of bus delays, accidents or lost, injured or returning students.
Communicates with law enforcement, EMS and other first responders in the event of accidents or incidents involving school buses.
Responds to inquiries from schools, parents, or other district officials about the locations and arrival times of school buses.
Checks voicemail upon morning opening and periodically to ensure there are no missed call outs or messages from parents or district administration.
Other Duties
Ensures bus gates are open prior to beginning of the driving shift and closed at the end of the driving shift.
Inspects bus parking lots and buses for security, damage or evidence of intrusion.
Opens the building at the beginning of the morning shift as required – includes deactivating the security system for the Transportation Department and checking the security of the offices and equipment.
Secures the building at the end of the driving shift as required – includes setting security code and ensuring all internal offices are closed and locked.
Retrieves and archives video from school buses upon request of transportation supervisors or the Director/Assistant Director.
Keeps Director and Assistant Director informed of relevant issues and events at all times.
Performs all other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation.
