Emergency Services Paramedic –

Adult Emergency Job Summary:

To provide direct and indirect patient care under the guidance and direction of the emergency services provider, including specific duties/procedures in relation to the care and treatment of patients to implement components of the plan of care through performance of technical procedures and skills. Education & Experience High school diploma/GED and completion of CAHEA or CAHEP EMT-paramedic program plus three (3) years of related pre-hospital experience. Certifications, Licenses or Registration required: valid driver’s license, NR EMP (National Registered Paramedic), and MS Paramedic within 2 weeks of hire. Certifications in basic life support, advanced cardiac life support required. NIMS (FEMA ICS 100 and 700) preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities The emergency services paramedic is qualified in basic and advanced life support and services by a competency-based training program of clinical, didactic, and practice instruction and by a field internship. Competencies include, knowledge of patient assessment, awareness of one’s abilities and limitations, the ability to relate to people, and a capacity for calm and reasoned judgment while under stress. The emergency services paramedic respects the individuality and privacy of patients and their family members.

Responsibilities:
  • Responds to campus emergencies as requested.
  • Assists in triage and ongoing patient assessment in collaboration with other healthcare providers.
  • Assists with resuscitation, airway management, vascular access and other procedures in accordance with the paramedic scope of practice under the direction of a physician.
  • Answers patients’ signals, assesses patients’ needs, and communicates requests to pertinent individuals as necessary; provides for the needs of the patient and family members when possible.
  • Maintains accurate records (Assessment, Vital Signs, I/O, Weight, etc.) and reports to changes to the appropriate emergency services provider.
  • Assists with providing services to one or more age populations in a manner that demonstrates an understanding of the functional/developmental age of the individual served.
  • Administers medications per emergency services provider order and per hospital policy.
  • Assists with venipuncture and point of care testing in accordance with established procedures; collects and delivers specimens and supplies to the appropriate location within an acceptable time frame as directed.
  • Transports patients to procedures and inpatient care areas.
  • Monitors patients’ physical and emotional well-being and reports unusual behavior or physical ailment to the appropriate emergency services provider.

Physical and Environmental Demands Requires frequent exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, constant exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, constant working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, constant activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, frequent bending, constant lifting and carrying more than 100 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, constant crouching/stooping, constant driving, frequent kneeling, frequent pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, constant sitting, frequent standing, frequent twisting, and frequent walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%,constant-51% or more) 50%, constant-51% or more)
