The manager is expected to supervise the duties of 3 of the technicians as related to the mating (setting up breeding configurations as directed by the investigator and noting the birth of litters and recording the number of live pups in each litter), breeding (provide information on the breeding fecundity of each female breeder, observing and recording the observations of new mothers, observing and recording the status of the pups in each litter), weaning of litters (as directed according to weaning logs, noting the number of pups weaned, and the sex of each pup weaned), providing identification to all live pups in each litter at the time of weaning (applies ear identification tags, and applies other identification methods (ear punch, tail tattoo, providing that information for the record of each pup), and performs sample collection (proper labeling of tissue vials for tissue collection and obtaining tissue samples from mice to be genotyped by research staff) from mice. On a weekly basis, the manager will conduct an “eyes on” inventory of all animals housed in the breeding colony. The Manager will then supervise the reconciliation of the inventory with the SoftMouse database. He will also supervise the transient worker who responsible for the maintenance of the SoftMouse Database. The database is necessary for the smooth function of the breeding facility. It offers the only method for the investigators to keep track of the performance of their breeding animals, the number of pups born and weaned, and the identification of all weaned pups. Data maintained in the database includes breeding set-ups, euthanasia of unwanted animals, transfers of animals from the breeding facility to investigator holding rooms, tissue samples, notification of readiness of tail samples, or any other requests. The Manager shall maintain a filing system of all such c-communication requests from investigators that deal with their animals in the breeding colony. The Manager is responsible for maintaining a working inventory spreadsheet detailing all requests (see above) for transfers, breeding set-ups, euthanasia, any weanings). This spreadsheet is used as the daily work list for the technicians and reflects the completion of each task assigned. The spreadsheet also functions as the starting place for the week s eyes on inventory and database reconciliation. The Manager is responsible for ascertaining that all transfer requests meet the requirements as stated in the Mutant Mouse Breeding Facility Standard Operating Procedures. This individual, upon receipt of a transfer request, shall verify that the strain of animals is on an approved animal protocol and that sufficient numbers of animals of that strain remain on the protocol (have not been used) that will allow the transfer of animals to the investigator. Once the information is verified, the request is assigned to a technician, or the manager may complete the request. The investigator is notified of the completion of the request. The Manager is responsible for maintaining records on each request. The Manager is responsible for maintaining and producing the records required of each strain of mouse in the breeding facility detailing numbers of breeders, numbers of offspring (pups), numbers of pups weaned, numbers of pups which are genotyped, number of pups euthanized, number of animals transferred to investigators (for use in experiments). These records are reported on a monthly basis but require weekly updating. The Manage will conduct an initial meeting with each investigator who desires to breed animals in the breeding facility. In this initial meeting, the Manager will assist the investigator in the completion of the Breeding Supplement, a requirement for requesting breeding on each animal use protocol. This information is a requirement for passage of an animal use protocol. The Manager Coordinator will meet with each investigator who has animals in the Mutant Mouse Breeding Facility on a regular basis (interval dependent on each investigator’s needs) to discuss breeding fecundity of strains being bred, changes in investigator requirements, any problems relating to the breeding of any or all strains maintained by that investigator, updates of animal numbers being produced, any new strains the investigator might be contemplating, any complaints, and any other pertinent information regarding breeding or the strains being maintained that would assist the investigator in the provision of animals for the investigator’s research. Meetings with investigators may occur more frequently if that investigator has complaints that require a face-to-face meeting. After each meeting with an investigator, the Manager will produce a written document detailing what was discussed in each meeting, which will be kept on file. In addition, copies of the written document will be sent to the investigator, to the Clinical Veterinarian, to the Assistant Director, Animal Resources, and to the Director, Animal Resources for their information. The Manager will assist the Associate Director, Animal Resources in researching information on each strain of animal being maintained in the breeding colony as to breeding traits, any gene lethality, expected number of offspring per litter, and any other information that would be beneficial to know regarding the breeding of that strain. The Manager will coordinate with the Clinical Specialist and the Associate Director, Animal Resources regarding a sentinel monitoring program for the breeding facility. This program is necessary to determine the disease status of the animals housed within the breeding facility. Testing is done 3 times yearly and consists of sampling of random mice 2 times yearly and exposing naïve mice to fecal material from breeding and offspring cages one time yearly. The Manager will supervise the 3 breeding colony technicians in the performance of daily health checks of all animals housed in the breeding facility. Such health information will be communicated to the investigator and to the Associate Director, Animal Resources. The Manager must be ready to assume the duties of the technician in the absence of the technician or in the event of an increased workload that cannot be accomplished by the remaining technicians. The Manager will also be responsible for all administrative functions dealing with the technicians he supervises. The includes approving leave requests, issues of work performance including any necessary disciplinary actions, annual performance planning, and annual performance evaluation.
