Since 1924, Northside Neighborhood House (NNH) has worked to empower residents north of the Tennessee River to create thriving communities across northern Hamilton County. NNH focuses on building relationships and connecting individuals to resources that help them establish stability for themselves and their families—whether that means securing housing with working utilities or supporting students in achieving academic success. Our Thrift Stores play a vital role in this mission. They generate essential revenue to fund NNH programs and provide affordable clothing and household goods to the community.
Position Summary:
The Truck & Facilities Assistant plays a supportive, hands-on role working closely with the Facilities Coordinator. This role supports NNH by transporting donations, assisting with store-to-store deliveries, and completing light maintenance tasks. Additional responsibilities include assisting with receiving, sorting, and processing donated items; loading bagged recycled clothing and other items onto a trailer for transport to recycling centers; and maintaining organization and cleanliness in thrift storage areas.
Essential Functions Schedule:
Regular and punctual attendance is required, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Flexibility is necessary to support thrift store operations and programming as needed.
Travel/Driving:
Regularly drives and operates a box truck to pick up donations and transport items between locations. Must have a valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, and be able to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical.
Equipment/Technology:
Proficient in using moving equipment such as dollies, carts, and lifting harnesses to safely handle large or heavy items. Comfortable using a smartphone for schedules, GPS navigation, calls, and text communication.
Physical Requirements:
Able to stand for extended periods and bend, stoop, push, pull, and lift items weighing 50+ pounds. Requires hand and finger dexterity to grip, carry, and maneuver bags, boxes, and other goods. Hearing and vision necessary to perform the essential functions of this position. Must be comfortable working indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions. Essential Job Duties Assist the Facilities Coordinator with GPS navigation and customer service during donation pick-ups and deliveries. Drive the NNH box truck to pick up large donated items (e.g., furniture) from donor homes and deliver items to thrift store locations. Follow all traffic laws, safety rules, and NNH policies. Safely load and unload furniture and other large donations onto and off of the box truck, using hand trucks, dollies, and teamwork to move heavy items. Assist donors by unloading and moving donated items from their vehicles into the store or processing areas. Support thrift store operations by sorting and organizing donated merchandise for sale or recycling. Load bagged recycled clothing and other items onto a trailer for transport to recycling centers. Accurately complete contribution forms and free item forms to keep proper donation records. Maintain clean, safe, and organized storage areas at all thrift store locations. Transport items between NNH thrift stores to support store operations and inventory needs. Provide excellent customer service to donors, shoppers, and community members at all times. Assist the Facilities Coordinator with work orders (typically 2-3 per week), such as simple maintenance tasks or supply transport, and other tasks as assigned. Other responsibilities as outlined in the Thrift Store Policies and Procedures Manual or as assigned by the supervisor and/or Chief Executive Officer.
Typical Working Conditions/Environment:
This position involves working both inside thrift store locations and outdoors, with regular time spent on a box truck. Candidates must be comfortable with physical labor, navigating urban and rural areas, and handling donated items—some of which may be dusty, older, moldy, or occasionally in poor condition. Staff must be willing to work in various weather conditions.
Qualifications Education/Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Experience driving and operating a box truck is required. Experience working in a retail, warehouse, or transportation setting is a plus.
Skills/Abilities:
Ability to relate to all socio-economic levels of society with a strong sense of empathy for under-resourced individuals. Ability to follow directions, work independently, and take initiative. A team-oriented attitude and willingness to pitch in where needed. Comfortable supporting work across both facilities and store operations. Strong customer service skills with a positive and professional attitude. Employment is contingent upon successfully passing a background check, drug screening, and completion of a DOT physical.
