Facilities Manager (Part-Time) Grace Lutheran Church Clarksville 2041 Madison Street, Clarksville, TN 37043 Introduction We are seeking a part-time facilities manager, which in the language of the church is known as a sexton. A sexton is a caretaker of the church buildings, furniture and grounds. At one time, cemetery care and the opening of graves were included in the sexton’s duties. In modern usage, custodians clean buildings used by the public, including churches, libraries and schools. Since all of a church’s assets and resources are tools by which the church’s calling may be fulfilled, the buildings and grounds that have been bequeathed to the current church from those in her past are in important tool in the church’s present ministry. It is therefore essential that the church utilize these resources to their fullest potential while being good stewards of these resources by tending to their maintenance, repair and improvement. It is only through such care that the assets of buildings and grounds may be handed down to future generations intact and capable of continuing to offer ministry to both the church and community. The work of the sexton is therefore essential to the functioning of the church as it seeks to serve God, its members and the wider community. Faithful care of grounds, buildings, and equipment helps to create a setting conducive to worship, study, discussion, pastoral care and fellowship. In order to facilitate her mission of worship and service, the church will seek out and utilize the talents of women, men and youth who have the ability to perform the duties of sexton and the church will provide appropriate support and compensation to those engaged to perform these tasks.

Senior Pastor and Chairman of Property Committee Summary:
Set up facility for church functions, assist with routine maintenance, supervise groundskeeping, and arrange security and access to the building. Essential Duties and responsibilities include the following:
Weekly:
1. Work with Office Staff to make sure remote access door system is working and unlock manual entryways for Sunday worship services and other parish events and lock up afterwards. 2. Adjust thermostats and lighting prior to and at the conclusion of facility use. 3. Supervise volunteers in the the placement and adjustment of marquee and other signation for regular weekly messages and prior to scheduled events. 4. Responsible for performing regularly minor maintenance needs, (including light bulbs, toilets, doors, locks, faucets, tables, chairs, etc.) as directed. 5. Set up furniture for any coming events (in classrooms, sanctuary, fellowship hall, etc.) and return the rooms to their ordinary set up. 6. Purchase supplies necessary for minor maintenance needs and repairs through approved vendors and in accordance with purchasing policies. 7. Maintain and keep an inventory of maintenance items in interior and exterior storage areas. 8. Assist Custodian with major cleaning jobs (as requested by Custodian). 9. Sign in and sign out tables or chairs loaned out to members (use form provided and take deposit).
Monthly:
10. Sees that safety devices such as fire extinguishers, smoke detectors and emergency lights are inspected as required and working, and adhere to all applicable regulations. 11. Check gutters, down spouts, and catch basins to make sure they flow freely. 12. Keep records of all minor maintenance performed and prepare list of major maintenance needs or issues for consideration by Properties Committee. 13. Supervise all regularly scheduled vendors and their work in the facility. 15. Supervise trash disposal and recycle pick up. 16. Supervise groundskeeping (mowing, gardens, and shrubs, etc.) 18. Provides needed services related to weddings, memorials, and funerals.
As Needed:
19. Removes snow and ice from stairs and walks as needed. 20. Clean and organize Janitor Closet (old building) and exterior shed as needed. 21. Replace broken floor tiles and/or replace damaged, stained, or broken ceiling tiles. 22. Bring out and store away seasonal items (Christmas decorations, etc.) 23. Check building and grounds for damage following storms or high winds. 24. See that security lights are working (call CDE if they are not) 25. Performs other responsibilities as directed and negotiated within the limits of the position. Education and/or
Experience:
Must be able to read, write, and speak English in an understandable manner (in order to take direction, handle equipment and chemicals safely, and communicate with vendors, etc.) One year or more experience in cleaning and caring for a building preferred. Consideration will be offered to those demonstrating core competencies in related maintenance, repair or building fields. Certificates, licenses, registrations, as well as a valid Driver’s license Working conditions:
- Sits, stands, bends, reaches and moves intermittently during work.
- Is subject to frequent interruptions.
- Works beyond normal hours for planned functions of the church and emergencies.
- Communicates with supervisor and other church staff, volunteers, members and guests.
- Is exposed to slippery conditions, odors, outside weather conditions, etc.

- Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant it.
- Must be able to deal tactfully with staff, volunteers, members and guests.
- Must maintain care and use of supplies and equipment and make regular inspections of the building’s areas.
- Must possess sight, hearing senses, or use prosthetics that enable these senses to meet the responsibilities of the job.
- Must be able to manage time and multiple tasks and projects.
- May be required to lift, push, pull, and move equipment, supplies, etc., up to 25 pounds and transport up to 150 pounds with mechanical assistance.
- Must be in good general health.
- Must be able to supervise other staff and volunteers.

Up to 20 hours per week;

$20/hour; paid twice monthly
