$42.4K – $54.3K a year 7 hours ago Qualifications Writing skills Mid-level 3 years Master’s degree Bachelor’s degree Teaching Time management Full Job Description Assistant Writing Specialist (Part-Time) In collaboration with the Senior Writing Specialist, the Assistant Writing Specialist will support students in writing strong essays for their college applications. In addition, this position will provide support in reviewing essays, especially during the fall semester and early part of the Spring semester, a necessity with almost 100 percent of students submitting their first applications by early November, with the graduating classes increasing to 180 students. The position is part-time (20 hours a week) and primarily conducted virtually, though the occasional on-site meeting is possible. The position reports to the Co-Executive Director of College Counseling and works primarily with the Senior Writing Specialist. Essential Duties Responsibilities Meet with Senior Writing Specialist on a weekly basis to ensure consistently high-quality service to students. Support students in writing and revising supplemental college essays and short responses. Respond to emails with brief questions from students about their essays (extensive questions and review of essays occur during meetings). Work with the college counselors to ensure that essay topics and quality are appropriate for the colleges to which the student is applying. Attend college counseling team meetings as determined by the Co-Executive Director of College Counseling and Senior Writing Specialist. Participate in relevant events as determined by the Co-Executive Director of College Counseling and Senior Writing Specialist. Routinely review caseload with Senior Writing Specialist to harmonize approaches and ensure “strong college essays” across caseloads. Support students in writing and revising letters of continued interest, scholarship essays, and waitlist response communications. Attend (onsite) and support college essay writing workshops in February and May. The Senior Writing Specialist oversees and coordinates workshops. Assume a caseload of Juniors in March to begin working on Personal Statements that must be completed by August 15. Meet with Senior Writing Specialist regularly to ensure consistently high-quality service to students. Additional Responsibilities Perform other related responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree is required, Master’s preferred. Three or more years of relevant experience in teaching or coaching writing. Understanding of selective college admissions or college counseling is preferred, but not required. Experience working with a diverse student population. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Outstanding writing skills. Strong organizational and time management skills are required. Excellent skills in listening, counseling, creativity, and technology. Able to occasionally work some evenings and weekends to support students who are often working on deadlines.
