PRIMARY FUNCTION/PURPOSE
The Development Associate supports Housing Solutions of New York’s fundraising efforts by managing donor data, supporting campaigns and events, assisting with grants and proposals, and ensuring accurate and timely donor communication. This position manages development operations and supports events and campaigns that advance our mission. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys solving problems, and is committed to promoting housing equity and community empowerment. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist in the planning and execution of annual appeals, donor campaigns, and giving initiatives Ensure timely and personalized gift acknowledgments and stewardship communications Maintain donor recognition lists for website, reports, and campaigns Help design and coordinate donor cultivation touchpoints (mailings, calls, handwritten notes) Assist with drafting donor-centric content, including impact updates, annual appeal letters, and campaign narratives Prepare donor acknowledgment letters and support stewardship efforts Conduct prospect research to identify new funders, individual donors, and corporate sponsors Maintain accurate donor records using the organization’s system Track donations, pledges, and acknowledgments Generate reports for leadership and board development updates Support the development and submission of grant applications and reports Provide logistical support for fundraising events and donor gatherings Manage RSVP lists, name tags, guest communications, and post-event follow-up Partner with Program, HR, and Finance teams to gather relevant impact metrics and client data for reporting and storytelling Track in-kind donations and volunteer contributions related to events Work with vendors, venues, and print designers as needed Support the creation of email marketing content and social media assets for campaigns Maintain photo archive and story bank for development use Help keep the website’s development-related content (donor lists, impact stats, campaign messaging) updated Assist with drafting the annual report and impact summaries Manage volunteer communications and assignments related to events Assist in writing and editing donor newsletters, social media posts, and website content Schedule meetings and prepare materials for the development team Track deadlines and maintain a grants calendar Process invoices and assist with tracking development expenses Support the creation of marketing and fundraising collateral Generate weekly and monthly reports on giving trends, campaign performance, and segmentation strategies Maintain and reconcile gift tracking logs with Finance, support audit preparation and revenue tracking Monitor online giving platforms and flag processing issues or unusual donor activity Help gather and organize client impact stories for use in fundraising materials Preforms other duties as assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience 1-3 years of nonprofit experience in fundraising, grant writing, or communications Excellent attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience with donor database software Passion for the mission of Housing Solutions of New York and a commitment to advancing its goals Strong interpersonal, decision-making, and leadership skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Analytical thinking and ability to analyze data. Experience with event planning and/or grant writing Knowledge of NYC philanthropic and nonprofit landscape Excellent communication skills—written, verbal, and interpersonal Experience supporting grant proposals or managing fundraising events Familiarity with Give Butter, Canva, Mailchimp, or similar tools for light design and email marketing Proficiency with donor database software Highly organized, deadline-driven, and able to manage multiple priorities Ability to work independently while also contributing to team initiatives Strong commitment to social justice, equity, and the mission of HSNY Occasional travel required.
