Position Overview:
The Development Officer is responsible for developing long-term philanthropic relationships and provides support for the administration of the 1827 and Legacy Societies. In collaboration with the Associate Director of Leadership and Planned Giving and colleagues across the organization, the Development Officer will personally qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors making primarily unrestricted gifts in support of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s mission. This front-facing role will require ongoing outreach to meet with members and donors through in-person visits, virtual meetings, and events. They will also support the solicitation and stewardship efforts across the Individual Giving Team.
Primary Responsibilities:
Qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of 100 prospects with capacity to make gifts of $1,827 to $25,000 annually leveraging the membership program and annual fund to grow unrestricted support for PHS.
Actively work to identify new prospective leadership giving donors by securing introductory visits with individuals identified by prospect research.
Maintain awareness of PHS philanthropic priorities and the multi-faceted impact of our work throughout the Greater Philadelphia region.
Discuss planned giving opportunities with donors who express an interest in learning more about ways to include PHS in their estate plans.
Report and track fundraising progress with contact reports and updated gift proposals in the Raiser’s Edge database.
Produce acknowledgements for all Individual gifts over $1,000 within 48 hours. Produce and mail Individual Giving solicitations under the guidance of the Associate Director of Leadership and Planned Giving.
Work with the Associate Director of Leadership and Planned Giving to plan and support Individual Giving stewardship efforts.
Support the Development Coordinator in the planning and execution of 1827 and Legacy Society Events.
Represent PHS in a professional manner at key Development events, including member events and the Philadelphia Flower Show.
Qualifications/Specifications:
Minimum degree required: Bachelor’s degree in related field
Years of experience: 2-3 years fund-raising experience

Knowledges, Skills, Abilities required for success:
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Windows, familiarity with fundraising databases including Raisers Edge
Independent and collaborative work style
Excellent Written and oral communication Excellent research, planning, and managing skills
Physical Demands:
This is largely a sedentary role; however, some physical demands are required. This includes the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand as necessary.
Standard Hours (including travel, evening, and weekend hours): Monday – Friday; 9am-5pm; travel- local and regional, required.
Flower Show requirements: Create cultivation and stewardship opportunities for PHS donors. Be available on an as-needed basis for operations support, expected to work a total of (9) 8-hour workdays (=72 hours) with 75% (=54 hours) worked at the Show including 3 weekend days.
