Position Summary The Assistant AD for Advancement / Director of Development for Athletics is a key member on the Athletics Advancement team at William & Mary. Athletics is an integral part of the educational experience at William & Mary, delivering a holistic experience with high standards of performance; providing an environment where champions of uncompromising character, fully engaged with campus and the community, prepare to make a positive impact in a complex and changing world. The athletics fundraising team is seated in two offices: University Advancement and William & Mary Athletics. The Assistant AD reports to the Associate AD for Advancement, working to build a high-level fundraising program that generates significant revenue for William & Mary’s priorities for athletics programming. The Assistant AD is expected to develop an appropriate-sized major gift portfolio of prospects by the end of their second year in the position and will be expected to conduct an appropriate number of $50,000+ asks based on the portfolio. In addition to annual dollars raised, performance goals include number of asks and closes, activity/move measures as well as the number of prospects identified and qualified for major gift potential. 12 month Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education, experience, and training. Experience (typically 4+ years) managing and developing relationships with constituents, clients, customers, in a for profit or nonprofit setting. Examples include outside sales, marketing or public relations, financial planning or wealth management, admissions or enrollment, and membership development, as well as academic fundraising or alumni engagement. Fluency in using persuasive language to promote visionary gift opportunities, with the proven ability to identify, qualify, and cultivate prospective major gift donors and exceed goals. Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to deal effectively and discreetly with donors, colleagues, and other appropriate officials. Strong business acumen with the ability to work effectively in a metrics-driven environment and a commitment to building a culture of engagement and philanthropy. Strong organizational skills, an entrepreneurial spirit, independence and the ability and desire to work effectively and successfully with minimal supervision, while managing complex priorities and projects concurrently. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in Sports Management, Business, or other related field. Experience in fundraising with the demonstrated ability to identify, qualify, and cultivate prospective donors or clients or equivalent relationship management experience from client-serving or revenue-generating roles in other industries. Experience soliciting major gifts. Experience managing systems and advancement strategies in a university setting (typically 4+ years). Experience in collegiate athletics fundraising. Experience with estate and endowed gifts. Experience drafting and executing creative donor and prospect strategies. Experience with volunteer board management. Experience exceeding goals in a metrics-driven organization. Understanding of volunteer management and its role in fundraising. Demonstrated ability to reach aggressive goals with the demonstrated ability to solicit and secure private gifts. Is the position remote work eligible?
