Job Description

General Manager Haselton Lumber Company 1763 Haselton Road, Wilmington, NY 12997

Position Summary:

The General Manager (GM) will serve as the operational leader responsible for translating company strategy into disciplined, high-quality daily execution. This role exists to unlock the CEO’s capacity to drive revenue growth, strengthen key customer relationships, and build scalable processes for the future. In the near term, the GM will be deeply involved in the day-to-day operations of the business, ensuring reliability, accountability, and operational excellence across all departments. Over time, as systems mature and teams are developed, the GM will increasingly focus on leading through department heads, continuously refining execution to support sustainable growth.

General Manager’s Mission:

To lead and coordinate daily operations across the mill, yard, delivery, and office teams — ensuring consistent execution, team performance, and customer satisfaction — while building the systems, structure, and culture necessary to scale. The General Manager is responsible for stewarding the daily health of the business, enabling the CEO to focus fully on revenue growth, financial development, and long-term strategic direction.

Role:

The right person for this role is a strong operator and a grounded, practical leader— someone who takes ownership, leads with clarity, and thrives in the messy middle between strategy and execution. You don’t wait for problems to escalate—you notice issues early and get ahead of them. You’re calm under pressure, steady through uncertainty, and committed to doing things the right way. You’re just as comfortable jumping on a forklift as you are working through a spreadsheet. You’re never afraid to roll up your sleeves—unloading a truck, walking the yard, or solving problems face-to-face alongside your team. You lead by example and aren’t above any task. While a significant part of your job involves data, planning, and systems work, you fight to spend meaningful time outside each day—because you know real leadership happens where the work is happening. You stay grounded in a low-tech environment and make it a point to meet your team on their turf, not just from behind a screen. Details matter deeply to you. You notice immediately when trash bins are overflowing, inventory isn’t stacked correctly, or anything else isn’t just right—and it drives you to fix it immediately. You track performance, spot issues early, and use tools like Excel to bring clarity to chaos. You don’t just react; you build systems that prevent problems and empower others to succeed. You’ll thrive here if you: Like being in the mix—this is hands-on leadership. Take pride in delivering great work, even when no one’s watching. Confidently set expectations and handle difficult conversations head-on. Work well with diverse personalities—from CDL drivers and accountants to contractors. Enjoy improving systems, not just running them. See numbers and spreadsheets as valuable tools for decision-making. Want to help build something lasting—not just show up for a job. You don’t need all the answers on day one—but you must learn quickly, lead effectively, and earn trust through action.
