OVERALL JOB PURPOSE

Responsible for developing and implementing an effective plan for securing philanthropic support through donor identification, cultivation, and stewardship, events, marketing and communications, planned giving, giving circles, and campaigns. The Vice President of Development will report directly to the CEO and supervise the Major Gifts Officer, Grant Writer, Communication and Events Coordinator, and Volunteer Coordinator/Receptionist. Also, the VP of Development will initiate and support special events, volunteer activities, marketing and communications, and promotional opportunities that increase agency visibility, generate community support and support department and organization goals and objectives. This individual is expected to promote the spirit of teamwork, demonstrate the ability to be a good colleague, strive to continuously improve the quality of the agency and self; accept cultural and individual differences, uphold the vision and mission of the agency and actively participate in agency initiatives to achieve these goals.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Set annual fundraising goals to support annual and strategic plans. In conjunction with the CEO and the Senior Leadership Team, the Vice President of Development will identify annual fundraising goals for Major Gifts, Annual Fund, Sponsorship, Campaign, Events, Grants, and Planned Giving designed to support the organization’s annual and strategic plans. The VP of Development is responsible for researching and recommending a department budget including projected sources and amounts of revenue and expenses. Provide monthly reports on budget goals. 2. Organize and execute Major Gift, Sponsorship, Annual Appeal, and Campaign solicitations. Oversee donor recruitment, cultivation, stewardship, and recognition of assigned constituents. Establish giving circles and craft fundraising materials. Solicitations should minimally include direct mail, email, newsletter articles/announcements, presentations, proposals, sponsorship levels, donor recognition opportunities, and plans to increase annual support. Ensure timely recognition of donor gifts in collaboration with the development team, CEO, and Board as appropriate. 3. Implement Major Gift and Planned Giving solicitation programs. Establish a recognition plan, develop materials, cultivate donors, and build networks to increase planned giving commitments. Identify prospective donors, create donor profiles, research necessary information, prepare major gift proposals, and schedule meetings for prospective donors with CEO and Board members. Ensure that donor contacts are recorded. Create a strategy for moving donors from a lesser to a higher level of giving. 4. Develop Volunteer and Employee Giving programs. Support the development of an effective volunteer program including recruitment and staffing volunteer activities and events. Coordinate a) employee-related fund-raising activities and b) outreach to summer readers for Freedom School in collaboration with CEO. 5. Support Grant Writing and Reporting efforts. Collaborate with Grants Manager and Leadership Team to research, identify, and apply for grants and contracts that align with the organization’s vision, annual plan, and strategic priorities and ensure appropriate funding of programs and services. 6. Staff Board and Advisory Committees. Serve as staff liaison to Board committees and/or advisory committees as agreed upon with the CEO. Prepare an agenda for each meeting and ensure that minutes of each meeting are recorded and reflect attendance, goals, accomplishments, obstacles, achievements and decisions. 7. Data Management. Ensure information in Raiser’s Edge is accurate and up to date for assigned constituents. Prepare and present reports to board members, donors and other stakeholders as needed. 8. Leadership, Ongoing Professional Development, and Teamwork. Participates in internal meetings, required training, board and internal committees, leadership team meetings, and external committees as needed. Actively seeks out opportunities to build skills and support the professional development of coworkers, direct reports, and colleagues.

Contacts:

Extensive contact with the community with specific focus on individual and corporate donors, the media, Board members and volunteers. Has contact with all levels of staff within the organization.

Decision Making Authority :

Must be able to make effective decisions regarding strategies for increasing donor support of the agency.

Functional Knowledge :

Knowledge of fund raising and marketing strategies. Proficient in the use of Raiser’s Edge, Canva, Word Press, Microsoft office suite, and general computer skills. Ability to write successful proposals, solicitations, appeals and reports. Knowledge of budget development and effective management techniques.

Education and Specific Training :

Minimum of bachelor’s degree in marketing, business or related field. Master’s Degree preferred. CFRE or extensive course work/seminar training in fund raising preferred.

Experience :

Minimum of 3 years fund raising experience with at least 1 year of supervisory/management experience.

Availability:

Weekend and evening work is required to support department functions and organizational initiatives.

Responsibility Level :

Senior level position.

Supervisory Responsibility :

Development staff, volunteers or interns as assigned.
