Description of Work This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits, competitive salaries and many career development opportunities. This is a Transportation Worker II position within the Roadside Environmental Unit in Buncombe County. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible tasks in the operational areas of erosion control, planting and plant maintenance, herbicide operations and general Roadside Environmental operations. Work involves planting shrubs, trees, flowers, and ground cover; seeding and mulching; installing traffic and erosion control devices, operating hand and power tools, inspecting and servicing equipment. Labor intensive. Required to work in diverse working environment; all weather conditions and terrain, heavy traffic and traffic moving at high speeds. Some night and weekend activities are required, including emergency work such as storm damage cleanup/snow/ice removal. Familiar with or able to learn to use small hand tools, power tools, operate augers, manual/hydraulic and other tools. Operate various trucks, trailers, tractors, and specialized equipment. Must have ability to act upon both verbal and written communication. May perform variety of other assigned duties. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Qualified applicants must submit an application that CLEARLY reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: Experience operating power tools such as chainsaw, weed eater, skill saw, drill, compactor, jackhammer, etc.
Experience in at least one piece of Category B equipment (asphalt distributor, front end loader, dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, mulch blower, sod seeder, tractor with sprayer attachments, brush chipper, conventional pesticide applicator, front end loader, hydro seeder, skid steer)
Experience in correctly applying herbicides and pesticides in accordance with the label, as well as proper storage and disposal techniques.
Additional Expectations:
Working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. Manual labor includes, but is not limited to operating chain saws, shoveling, driving trucks and litter pickup. Employees must be able to operate the minimum amount of equipment required in the preceding level. Employees at this level may train on and operate equipment associated with the specialist level for a small percentage of time. Work may include lifting as much as 50lbs repeatedly. Employees must have the ability to climb, bend, transverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. May require work during nontraditional workhours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Position is subject to emergency call back. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances. High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Requirements Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
