LITTER LABORER APPLY

Purpose of Job The purpose of this position is to remove litter from the side of roads and assist with dump cleanup along the public rights-of-way (ROW) maintained by the Knox County Solid Waste Department or on other public lands. Essential Functions The Litter Laborer is responsible for the following essential functions: Work alongside roadways in a safe manner to gather litter Walk and work on uneven surfaces Work for extended periods of time in various weather conditions Manage workflow and day to day administration of litter activities including problem solving litter and dump cleanup of County roads Additional Job Functions Ensure regular, punctual attendance during scheduled work hours Receive calls or messages regarding work schedule Respond to and report immediately if called upon by local regional or central office supervisors as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County Mayor’s Office Drive County vehicles to and from workplace, facilities, and work zones Perform other duties as required Minimum Training & Qualifications No minimum formal education is required No prior experience required Must complete and pass required on-line webinar safety test(s) within appropriate timeframes from date of hire as designated by the County. Valid TN Driver’s License required Specialized Knowledge N/A Competencies Execute duties of low complexity Solve simple problems Ability to count items (such as discarded tires) and report such findings to Litter Crew Leaders Ability to take verbal direction Communicate to provide information Ensure regular, punctual attendance during scheduled work hours Basic understanding of computers, printers and other office equipment Ability to focus and demonstrate great attention to detail Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a team Physical Requirements This position requires the following physical abilities: Frequent moderate effort or continuous light activity or occasional heavy activity Regularly use body members to work Frequently stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, crawl, reach, stand for extended periods, push, pull, grasp, lift, move or carry objects or materials, and engage in activities requiring repetitive motions Occasionally exert up to 50 pounds of force; frequently exert up to 25 pounds of force; and almost constantly exert up to ten pounds of force to move objects and materials. Occupational Hazards Work in inclement weather including precipitation and high or low temperature extremes Exposure to high vehicular traffic areas, biting insects, rodents, broken glass, metal shards, poison ivy and other noxious plants, and other hazards typical of roadways Litter Laborers will have the option, paid for by Knox County Government, to be inoculated against waste-related pathogens such as Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and tetanus Knox County Government is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
