Non-Exempt Job Goals :
Assist the Transportation Coordinator and Transportation Supervisor with the training of prospective bus drivers, paraprofessionals, and other transportation related services with the goal of safety and efficiency. To assist with the provision of excellent transportation services that will ensure the safety of students and drivers.
Qualifications :
High school diploma or equivalent (GED). Possess and maintains a valid Alabama Department of Education bus driver training certificate (meeting federal ELDT requirements), Alabama School Bus Driver certificate and commercial driver’s license (Class B minimal with PS Endorsement). Maintain a current Department of Transportation (DOT) physical as required by board policy. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457. Provide certification or documentation of physical health/abilities as required. Competent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrates the ability to become a first line of defense for child safety by discovering deficiencies in the transporting processes of special needs students and providing solutions that enhance a safe environment for transporting students. Ability to multitask various training opportunities including new bus drivers, paraprofessionals, current general education bus drivers as well as special needs bus drivers. Possess and maintains certification in wheelchair securement. Has the ability to speak to large groups and train in a classroom setting. Has the ability to relate training curriculum, concepts, and procedures to students ensuring that the training experience is tailored to maximize comprehension and retention from the learner. Ability and willingness to work after hours, weekends, or holidays when necessary. Ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to exert up to 30 pounds of force. Technically inclined, able to stream and facilitate webinars or other various training needs. Ability to keep confidentialities and handle sensitive situations that might arise at times.
Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions :
Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals, and priorities. Implement training for new prospective bus drivers following regulations set by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), and the Alabama State Department of Education. Ensure all new prospective bus drivers complete a training course complying with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) and Alabama State Department of Education regulations. Data Entry of all test scores from the Entry-Level Driver Training Program to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) national database. Be able to continue and maintain a sterling records of training and achievements. Coordinate, develop and participate in ongoing training with paraprofessionals, transportation staff, bus drivers, and others relating to student transportation needs of the school system. Develop and implement an Obstacle Avoidance Training Program for drivers needing remediation in the prevention of future accidents/incidents. Cross-train bus drivers from general education bus drivers to special needs bus drivers and vice versa. Provide training resources and confirm all school bus evacuation drills have been completed for all routes. Provide training and resources to special needs drivers to ensure the department is meeting the needs of students. Provide training and resources for drivers during driver orientation, symposium, and other departmental professional development opportunities. Promote team building training, coaching, and mentoring to employees. Identify gaps in skills and develop a training opportunity for employees. Develop presentations, training materials, and handout materials. Adheres to all traffic laws and driving safety rules. Maintains cleanliness of vehicles and office area. Reports all accidents immediately to the transportation office and other appropriate officials. Follows school system procedures related to accidents and post-accident activities. Reports driving citations (personal vehicle or school system vehicle) to the supervisor. Maintains cooperative and appropriate relationships with school administrators, bus drivers, and other employees. Demonstrates ability and willingness to be called out for emergency or after-hours assignments on nights, weekends, or holidays. Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters. Performs duties in a courteous, professional manner. Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility. Responds to inquiries, request, constructive feedback, concerns and/or complaints in a timely and positive manner. Properly uses and cares for equipment and material resources of the school system and effectively supervises and monitors others in the care, maintenance, and use of equipment and inventory. Reports promptly all mechanical needs to appropriate person. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local board policies and state, federal, and local regulations. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with board policies and procedures. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor(s).
Terms of Employment:
Regular employee contract with attention to bus driver requirements for routes and days assigned to drive; salary based on Board approved salary schedule.
