Job Description

DESCRIPTION

Michael Baker International is seeking a visionary and experienced Geotechnical Engineering Department Manager to lead and grow our geotechnical engineering practice. Based in our Pittsburgh (Moon Township), PA headquarters, this in-office leadership role combines strategic direction, technical excellence, and operational oversight. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing department operations, ensuring high-quality project delivery, and driving business development.

Key responsibilities include:

Leading the geotechnical engineering team in project execution, including scope, schedule, budget, and quality control. Providing technical oversight, QA/QC leadership, and mentoring to staff. Coordinating staffing, project priorities, and resource allocation. Managing departmental budgets and contributing to office-wide financial planning. Overseeing project management activities such as research, design, reporting, and client coordination. Preparing proposals, managing client relationships, and supporting marketing efforts. Ensuring compliance with company processes including the Michael Baker Way and project performance methodologies. Recruiting, developing, and retaining top talent within the department.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field (Master’s preferred) Pennsylvania Professional Engineer (PE) license required or ability to obtain within 6 months. Minimum 12 years of geotechnical engineering experience. At least 5 years in a supervisory or leadership role. Demonstrated success in managing geotechnical projects and teams. Experience in geotechnical investigations, construction, and design, including earthwork, foundations, retaining walls, dams, and excavation support Strong leadership and team development capabilities, as well as proven business development skills and relationship management.

COMPENSATION

The approximate compensation range for this position is $120,000- $190,000 per year. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
