Description The Performing Arts Operations Manager is a hands-on leadership role responsible for overseeing facility operations at the Dothan Civic Center, Dothan Opera House, Porter Park Amphitheater, and Roy Driggers Municipal Building. This position leads a team of full-time and sporadic staff in maintaining cleanliness, event support, and daily operations. Major Duties Supervises and directs the daily operations of the Dothan Civic Center, Dothan Opera House, Porter Park Amphitheater, and Roy Driggers Municipal Building, with a visible leadership presence during operational hours and major events. Manages full-time and occasional/sporadic employees to ensure high standards in facility cleanliness, maintenance, and event readiness. Addresses complaints and resolves problems efficiently and professionally, promoting a culture of teamwork, respect, and accountability. Oversees the cleaning and maintenance of all assigned city facilities. Assigns and tracks daily and weekly cleaning checklists and personally conducts walkthroughs to verify task completion. Coordinates with department heads whose offices are housed in the Roy Driggers Municipal Building to ensure facility standards are met and maintained. Works directly with the Event Manager and Production Manager to support event setup, execution, and breakdown, adjusting responsibilities and priorities as needed to meet event requirements. Collaborates with clients to develop event layouts, floorplans, and operational support strategies. Directs all aspects of venue setup to ensure client satisfaction. Trains staff on custodial procedures, safety practices, expectations for performance, and professionalism. Reviews the calendar of events and develops work schedules for both full-time and sporadic employees using department-approved scheduling and timekeeping software. Ensures schedule accuracy and that coverage aligns with departmental budget limits. Monitors employee time clock activity for early departures, missed breaks, and attendance issues. Submits monthly reports summarizing project completion, staffing needs, and time clock trends. Manages inventory of maintenance supplies, cleaning materials, and equipment. Reorders items as needed, while remaining cost-conscious and avoiding overstock. Assists with the purchase and setup of food, drinks, and supplies for concessions and bars. Maintains related inventory and support operations as needed. Programs and oversees HVAC and automated lighting systems for assigned venues. Assists in preparation of the department’s bi-annual operating budget and makes recommendations for equipment upgrades, repairs, and facility improvements. Maintains Civic Center flags and ensures exterior presentation of the venue is professional. Serves as Manager on Duty during events, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as required by the event schedule. Recommends hiring choices, conducts training, oversees daily scheduling, monitors performance, addresses discipline and conflict resolution, and ensures accountability across all team members. Performs a variety of custodial and facility support duties as needed, including loading/unloading equipment, assisting with props and decorations, and overseeing bus parking safety. Performs other related duties as assigned in support of the Performing Arts department and the City of Dothan.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
Knowledge of supervising custodial, maintenance, or facility operations teams. Knowledge of facility maintenance, cleaning principles, and best practices for public building operations. Knowledge of city and department policies and procedures. Knowledge of safety procedures, cleaning protocols, and operational standards. Knowledge of inventory management and cost-effective supply usage. Knowledge of building electronic control systems (HVAC, lighting, etc.). SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
This position reports directly to the Civic Center/Opera House Director and operates with a high degree of independence. Work is assigned through general instructions, with the expectation of sound decision-making related to facility operations, staff supervision, and event readiness. The Civic Center/Opera House Director or Event Manager may provide additional guidance as needed, and performance is evaluated based on facility cleanliness, event support execution, team productivity, and adherence to departmental policies.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include City of Dothan and departmental policies, OSHA regulations, local and state fire codes, venue rental agreements, technical riders, and event-specific requirements. These guidelines require independent judgment, discretion, and situational interpretation. The Performing Arts Operations Manager is expected to apply them appropriately while adapting to real-time operational needs and ensuring safety, compliance, and efficiency across all venues.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
The work consists of diverse facility operations and maintenance responsibilities across four public venues, each with unique scheduling demands, technical requirements, and tenant needs. Tasks include both hands-on work and administrative functions such as managing staff, coordinating schedules, and maintaining supply inventory. The variety and scale of events—ranging from small meetings to large-scale productions—add complexity and require adaptability. Successful performance in this role directly affects event execution, guest experience, promoter satisfaction, and the reputation of the facilities and the department.
CONTACTS
Contacts are typically with facility operations and production staff, other city personnel, department heads in the Roy Driggers Municipal Building, elected and appointed officials, event promoters, vendors, touring personnel, external contractors, performing arts groups, representatives from local schools, and members of the public. Contacts are typically for the purpose of exchanging information, coordinating services, resolving issues, motivating staff, and ensuring the smooth execution of events. This position requires professionalism, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate across a wide range of individuals and departments.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is physically active and performed in a variety of environments, including offices, venues, and outdoor event spaces. The employee frequently walks stands, bends, crouches, stoops, lifts and carries heavy objects, and climbs ladders. Use of tools and equipment require fine motor skills and dexterity is common. Employees are regularly exposed to loud noise, dust, cleaning chemicals, grease, machinery with moving parts, and varying weather conditions. Use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, goggles, and masks are required when conditions warrant.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has direct supervision over Arena Operations Worker I, Arena Operations Worker II, and Sporadic (part-time/on-call) custodial and operations staff. In the absence of the Civic Center/Opera House Director or Event Manager, the Performing Arts Operations Manager will act as the on-site lead and point of contact. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from a standard senior-high school or GED equivalent, as recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA); and Five (5) years recent experience in building, custodial, or facility maintenance; and Two (2) years recent supervisory experience to include managing operations, maintenance, or custodial teams. Associate’s degree from an accredited• college or university in Electronics Technology, Business Administration, Facility Management, or closely related field preferred. •Accredited through an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) or the Council for Higher Education (CHEA).
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid operator driver license and an acceptable driving record (PBA 09/10/01). Employees will work a flexible schedule to include irregular hours, evenings, holidays, overnights, and weekends as required by event and facility operations. An applicant for this position is subject to various background investigations up to and including criminal, credit, past employment, and reference checks. Employees are required to submit to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with the City of Dothan policy, which includes pre-employment and random tests for the duration of employment in this position.
