Director of Business and Operations Position Overview:
Hillel Academy, a private Jewish day school, is seeking a highly organized and strategic Director of Business and Operations. In this key leadership role, you will oversee the day-to-day business functions of the school to ensure operational excellence and financial stability. You will work closely with the Head of School and other key leaders—including the Director of Strategic Enrollment Management, Director of Development, Director of Facilities and Security, and the Director of Technology—to support a thriving, mission-driven educational environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Management Oversee all financial operations, including budgeting, accounting, forecasting, and financial reporting. Collaborate with the Head of School to integrate enrollment data and tuition models into comprehensive financial planning. Monitor cash flow and ensure the cost-effective use of resources in alignment with the school’s goals. Operations & Administration Manage day-to-day business functions and administrative systems to ensure smooth and efficient operations. Develop and implement policies, procedures, and systems that support the school’s strategic objectives. Coordinate with the leadership team to streamline operations across various departments. Human Resources & Staff Oversight Oversee HR functions including payroll, benefits administration, and staff record management. Support recruitment and onboarding processes for administrative and support staff, ensuring compliance with school policies. Vendor & Contract Management Manage relationships with vendors and service providers, ensuring contractual obligations are met and costs are optimized. Oversee procurement processes for supplies, equipment, and services required to maintain school operations. Facilities & Risk Management Partner with the Director of Transportation, Facilities, and Security to ensure the school’s physical environment is well-maintained, safe, and conducive to learning. Develop and implement risk management strategies and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations. Reporting & Data Analysis Provide regular performance reports to school leadership and the board, using data-driven insights to support strategic decision-making. Continuously assess operational efficiencies and recommend improvements to drive the school’s mission forward. Collaboration with Technology Leadership Coordinate with the Director of Technology to ensure that administrative and operational technology solutions effectively support business functions and school operations. Collaboration & Leadership Work closely with the Head of School and other directors to ensure alignment between operational strategies and the school’s broader educational goals. Serve as a proactive problem-solver and strategic partner, contributing to planning and execution in a collaborative, small-school setting.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Operations Management, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred. A minimum of 5 years’ experience in business operations, financial management, or a similar administrative role, preferably within an educational or nonprofit environment. Strong financial acumen, with expertise in budgeting, accounting, and financial reporting. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple responsibilities and work collaboratively in a small, dynamic team. Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills. Experience with vendor management, HR processes, and contract negotiations. Familiarity with Jewish education or community values. Proficiency in relevant software tools (e.g., QuickBooks, ERP systems, or similar financial and operations management applications).
Working Conditions:
Full-time position with salary and benefits package. Primarily based on-site at Hillel Academy, with occasional evening commitments for meetings or school events. A collaborative and supportive environment within a small, mission-driven school community.
