Consistent with the university’s shared services agreement with the William & Mary Foundation (WMF), this position is assigned 25% effort to support WMF with the responsibilities outlined below. Position Summary The Director of Principal Gifts Program Operations is a leader on the Principal Gifts team in the Office of University Advancement (OUA) at William & Mary, serving as the primary operational project manager and as an internal partner in coordinating and advancing philanthropic commitments of $5 million+. The Principal Gifts team is dedicated to nurturing the University’s most significant donor relationships and facilitating high-level donor engagement and stewardship activities. The Director of Principal Gifts Program Operations reports to the Assistant Vice President for Principal Gifts & Gift Planning and works as a strategic and innovative thought partner with internal OUA colleagues

  • the Prospect Development, Donor Relations & Stewardship, University Marketing & Communications, Campaign and fundraising teams
  • as well as the office of the Senior Vice President for University Advancement and the Office of the President.

The Director’s duties include strategy and leadership as well as program management and oversight to ensure all involved have the right information and resources to facilitate transformational commitments to the university. The Director is responsible for moving gifts and prospects through the principal gifts pipeline using goal-oriented outcomes and focusing on programmatic best practices as the central organizer for principal gift-level donor research, engagement and donor pipeline strategies. 12 month Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training. Strong communication and project management skills, an ability to work collaboratively and build effective relationships with multiple stakeholders, and to define and drive action toward advancing clear next steps and facilitate decision-making among leadership and colleagues. Significant experience (typically 4-8 years) in non-profit fundraising or an equivalent relevant industry. Demonstrated experience and success with leading and managing multiple stakeholders and competing priorities. Extraordinary organizational and project management skills, attention to detail, and execution. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and effective leadership of peers and others who are not direct reports. Ability to understand and analyze information from data and reports with a creative, curious, and entrepreneurial spirit. Ability to think critically and identify potential issues before they arise and the ability to thrive in an atmosphere of constant change. Professional demeanor, people skills, and ability to easily relate to a wide range of groups. An entrepreneurial spirit, and ability to work effectively and successfully with minimal supervision and collaborate while building consensus among colleagues and concurrently managing complex priorities and projects. Preferred Qualifications Comfort working with high-net-worth individuals, business executives, and institutional and community leaders. Demonstrated understanding of the relevance of philanthropy and knowledge of the fundraising profession and its principles and practices. Demonstrated success in prospect identification, relationship building, strategy development, philanthropic solicitation or similar experience in working with high-net-worth individuals in private banking, financial services, financial planning, or related professions. Experience in effectively managing and/or coordinating direct reports and teams. Is the position remote work eligible?
