Operations and Development Manager The New Garden Society Boston, MA Job Details Part-time $31 an hour 14 hours ago Benefits Travel reimbursement Paid time off Qualifications Mid-level Communication skills Horticulture Grant proposal writing Full Job Description Operations and Development Manager The New Garden Society’s part-time Operations and Development Manager plays a critical role in keeping The New Garden Society (TNGS) organized and on track to fulfill our mission. This role will report to the organization’s Co-Directors and support 2 other team members. This is both a remote and field-based position. Like all positions at TNGS, this position includes gardening alongside incarcerated individuals at a local prison or jail. This part-time role will average 13 hours/week, with seasonal variability. Since 2013, The New Garden Society (TNGS) has been transforming the landscapes of Greater Boston prisons, jails, and detention centers into gardens. Through the collaboration of horticulturists, landscapers, farmers, and incarcerated students, on-site gardens feed students and local neighbors experiencing food insecurity. The gardens also serve as classrooms for therapeutic and vocational training in the art and science of plants. Outside prison gates, TNGS organizes an increasingly inclusive local green industry that welcomes formerly incarcerated individuals into the essential work of caring for our landscapes. Administration & Operations (30%)
- Reply to all emails directed to
- Draft and disseminate quarterly newsletters
- Coordinate site logistics and communications for Board Meetings and All Staff Meetings
- Assist with donation tracking and acknowledgments
- Collaborate with staff to improve and maintain systems for organizational contacts Programs (20%)
- Support Program Manager with volunteer recruitment
- Serve monthly as an ‘ Educator’ at one prison or jail garden
- Manage speaking engagements for community groups Development (50%)
- Maintain a dashboard of relevant funding deadlines
- Collect materials for grant applications and write narratives
- Manage grant submissions and reporting
- Oversee the annual fundraising campaign
- Participate in quarterly board meetings

Additional qualifications include:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Exacting attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills
- Ability to work with TNGS and DOC staff, board, donors, volunteers and our students with a sense of humor and flexibility
- Self-motivated, highly organized, and systems-oriented
- Availability on Mondays. Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends
- Experience using Google Workspace is required
- Experience with grant writing and/or administration is preferred
- Preference is given to candidates with personal experience with the criminal justice system, and/or horticultural experience.
