Supervises the staff members within Policy Services Units, planning and monitoring the timely and accurate completion of the Department’s responsibilities.

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or professional level of knowledge in a specialized field, or equivalent related experience preferred.
  • Experience:
  • 4 – 6 years or Associates Degree equivalent plus 6 – 8 years.
  • Knowledge:
  • General and detailed knowledge of industry practices, standards, and concepts that pertain to operation supervised and related functions.
  • Decision Making:
  • Typically makes decisions that impact short-term results. Interprets and executes policies and guidelines set by higher level management. Determines how to meet schedules, allocating resources. Typically makes operational decisions independently. Recommends modifications to operating policies. Problems are generally diverse and may impact multiple units.
  • Supervision Received:
  • Assignments are generally task-oriented and operational. Generally receives moderate supervision. Work is reviewed for soundness of judgment, quality, and efficiency of unit operations.
  • Leadership:
  • Monitors daily operations of a unit. Accomplishes tasks primarily through supervision of non-exempt and entry-level exempt employees. Supervision involves hire, fire, pay, appraise decisions – not a Lead or Coordinator. Provides direction primarily using established procedures and policies.
  • Problem Solving /
Operations/Direct Work Involvement:
  • Monitors daily operations of a unit and actively assists, or provides direction to subordinates as required. May perform ongoing operational tasks, especially in staff, professional groups.
  • Client Contacts:
  • Majority of communication is with subordinates to middle managers internal and externally. Communication is usually related to specific tasks, project phases, or short-term operational issues.
  • Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Prior supervisory experience desired.

Completion of INS Series coursework preferred. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills required. Knowledge of the policy administration systems and procedures. Strong oral and written communication skills required. Demonstrated PC experience and the ability to develop and use spreadhseets, database applications, and query tools is essential.
