Purchasing Manager – Inventory & Procurement for Lumber Yard Confidential Yaphank, NY 11980 Job Overview We are seeking a detail-oriented and strategic Purchasing Manager to oversee procurement and inventory management, with a strong focus on lumber and related materials. This role is responsible for sourcing and purchasing all lumber, plywood, engineered wood, hardware, and special-order materials while maintaining optimal inventory levels to maximize profitability. The ideal candidate will manage supplier relationships, negotiate pricing, and support both sales and production teams in meeting operational goals. Responsibilities Monitor lumber inventory to maintain desired levels, ensuring profitability and availability for sales. Purchase all lumber, plywood, treated wood, engineered materials, hardware, and special-order products. Act on behalf of the President for immediate lumber purchases as needed. Establish and maintain strong relationships with vendors, negotiating special terms when necessary. Assist the all divisions and sales staff with special product inquiries and sourcing. Generate and manage lumber purchase orders. Supervise cycle counts, annual physical inventories, and bank collateral exams, reconciling counts with inventory systems. Enter builder pricing into the data processing system monthly. Review and analyze gross profit exceptions. Identify and report inventory discrepancies or errors daily. Prepare customer quotes as required. Provide coverage for inside lumber sales during staff absences. Skills & Qualifications Proven experience in purchasing, procurement, or supply chain management, preferably in the lumber or truss industry. Strong negotiation skills with a track record of securing favorable supplier terms. Proficiency in DMSI Agility or similar inventory management software for procurement operations. Solid understanding of inventory control, pricing structures, and gross profit analysis. Excellent analytical skills to evaluate market trends, supplier performance, and procurement costs. Strong communication and collaboration skills for internal team coordination and vendor management. Ability to multitask and make quick purchasing decisions in a fast-paced environment.
