Exceptional Education Program Specialist

REPORTS TO

Executive Director of Exceptional Education

JOB GOAL

To assist in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating instructional support services to maximize learning opportunities for students

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree with current Alabama certification in special education or related field Minimum of three (3) years’ teaching experience; high school experience preferred Leadership experience preferred Proficiency in oral and written communication skills Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups Ability to relate well to students, parents, and teachers Excellent organization, time-management, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills Ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information in a professional manner Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information Ability to meet suitability criteria under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457 Such Alternatives to the above qualifications as state, federal and local law and the Board may require

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, mission, goals, and priorities Remains informed on local, state, and federal policies and procedures and developments and innovations in the field of special education Assists with departmental training and implementation to include but not limited to Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004, Mastering the Maze, and the Alabama Administrative Code Assists in interpreting, enforcing, and monitoring compliance with federal and state laws and state and local board policies Investigates, reviews, recommends, and provides training on research-based intervention strategies and instructional materials effective in addressing the needs of students Reviews and monitors Individualized Education Plans as needed and assists teachers in writing effective, student-focused IEPs when requested Assists with full implementation and training of Powerschool Special Programs Assists with the coordination of the special education referral process Assists in determining the appropriate placement of special education students and related services as needed Participates in IEP and eligibility meetings when requested or as needed Adheres to local Board policies, administrative procedures, and other like directives, as well as state, federal, and local laws Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s) This job description describes the general nature and level of work performed by employees assigned to this position.
