A Parent Peer Support Specialist is a provider who is parenting or has parented a child experiencing mental, emotional or behavioral health disorders and can articulate the understanding of their experience with another parent or family member. This individual may be a birth parent, adoptive parent, family member standing in for an absent parent, or other person chosen by the family or youth to have the role of parent.

Examples of Job Requirements:
  • Provide authentic and purposeful support to parents /primary caregivers.
  • Support parents/primary caregivers in achieving their identified goals.
  • Deliver intentional support activities that build on the strengths and resiliency traits of parent/primary caregiver.
  • Collaborate with agency staff internally and representatives from community-based organizations and child-serving systems in providing support to families receiving services.
  • Participate in supervision by a Rehabilitative Services Professional.
  • Maintain appropriate written clinical documentation to support each service, activity and session provided within the scope of the program.
Supervisor:

This position is typically supervised by a Program Coordinator/Program Director.

Required Qualifications:

Must meet criteria for Parent Peer Support Specialist as defined by Medicaid. The Parent Peer Support Specialist must meet the following minimum expectations: 1. Must have parented or be currently parenting a child experiencing mental, emotional or mental health disorders and can articulate the understanding of their experience with another parent or family member and be willing to share his or her personal experiences. 2. Must have capacity to work flexible hours including evening/weekend availability based on the needs of the parent. 3. Must have a high school diploma or GED. 4. Must be able drive to families’ homes, community events, and/or schools as needed at times which may involve climbing stairs. 5. Must have a valid Alabama driver’s license. 6. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. 7. Must have basic typing/computer processing skills. 8. Must be able to complete and pass the Mental Health Parent Peer Support Provider Training and exam approved and sponsored by ADMH.
