AUTHORIZATION SPECIALIST I

Authorization Specialists are responsible for ensuring the accuracy of employer and employee paperwork and recording the necessary information in Palco’s software. It is the responsibility of the Authorization Specialist to ensure that required employer and employee paperwork has been completed and recorded in Palco’s software and that program required background checks have taken place. Duties and Responsibilities Review incoming Participant authorizations and verify accuracy against program and payer requirements. Enter and update service authorizations in FMS systems to trigger Participant budget setup and service planning. Serve as the primary point of contact for resolving authorization discrepancies, missing information, or conflicting data. Track, monitor, and renew expiring authorizations to prevent service interruptions for Participants. Collaborate cross-departmentally to ensure timely processing and participant activation. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of program-specific rules for multiple states and waiver types. Communicate professionally with MCOs, support brokers, and case managers to clarify service needs and program alignment. Ensure authorizations support program compliance, labor rules, and appropriate service codes. Document and escalate issues related to delays or barriers in authorization receipt or processing. Support audits and internal quality reviews with thorough documentation and system accuracy.
Skills and Qualifications:
Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, including the ability to analyze information, pay attention to detail, take initiative to follow-up on transactions, and make decisions about information. Experience entering or reviewing Medicaid waiver service authorizations in support of self-directed or FMS programs. Ability to manage multiple program rules simultaneously. Excellent communication and follow-up skills across a variety of stakeholders. Must possess solid skills with email, Internet, and Microsoft Office, including the use of word processing, spreadsheets, and file maintenance programs. Must be willing to work Monday through Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm or additional time if necessary, to complete duties and responsibilities. Must be a self-starter and extremely independent. The ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines with minimal oversight is required.
Preferred Skills:
Knowledge of state-specific self-directed services. Understanding of Participant budgets, service codes, and authorizations. Ability to work in a fast-paced, detail-oriented, and participant-centered environment. Familiarity with self-direction, participant-directed services, and home-and community-based services (HCBS). 1-2 years of experience in Medicaid waiver programs, authorizations, or financial management services preferred.
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration, social services, or related field preferred.
