Program Director, Literacy – Sulphur Springs

out of 5 stars 8412 N. 13th Street, Tampa, FL 33604 Under the direct supervision of the Executive Director, the Program Director will be responsible for all aspects of the YREADS program sites and the New Worlds Reading Initiative, to include but not limited to implementing specialized literacy curriculum, providing literacy instruction, and completing administrative duties as needed. The Program Director will drive superior program quality, achieve all grant metrics, and enhance participant experience specifically in the area of access, achievement, and engagement in literacy.
Critical areas of expertise include:
managing program quality, interacting with parents and school administrators, grant management implementation of curriculum programming, staff leadership, proven results in growth in programs, successfully overseeing part-time and entry-level staff teams and interviewing, volunteer recruitment, and relationship building.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Quality and Growth Responsible for implementing lesson plans, and weekly enrichment activities to promote individual child development. Assess the needs and interests of individuals and groups and prepare instructional program activities accordingly, given the available materials, equipment or center. Develop curricula and plan course content and methods of instruction; evaluate and revise curricula as needed. Develop plans for Family Nights and communication to encourage family support of the program objectives and to build strong families. Form relationships with principal, guidance staff and reading specialists at program school sites to promote a team approach to youth mentoring. Lead volunteer recruitment and retention efforts for YREADS programs including the successful execution of quarterly recruitment events, successful screenings, and ongoing volunteer trainings. Organize and present events and activities aimed at volunteer/mentor retention and appreciation. Support the planning and facilitation of Community Literacy Events and Parent Workshops, providing access and tools to enhance literacy engagement at home. Serve as literacy programming content expert, and in collaboration with the Sulphur Springs YMCA’s Afterschool & Camp leadership team, support with academic curriculum-activity development as needed. Participate in association BASE and Camp Service Delivery Team meetings to support high-quality development and delivery of youth programming Operations/Team Leadership Participates in hiring, developing, motivating and retaining a committed staff team passionate about the YMCA’s mission, safety and service to members, and the Tampa Y promise. Supervise staff and staff teams; on-board staff to grant deliverables, lead trainings, provide coaching and guidance, and assist in the resolution of staff or participant concerns. Assists with monitoring staff members and volunteers are scheduled in accordance to safety and program needs and ensures all safety and program ratios are followed. Plan and implement appropriate daily lesson or event logistics to support staff and volunteers in carrying out activities. Train YMCA staff and sub-contractor staff on management of YREADS Program management, as well as literacy skills, volunteer recruitment and retention. In collaboration with the Executive Director, help prepare budget and ensure operations are within approved budget. Ensure all governmental, YMCA and organizational records and reporting requirements are in compliance. Communicate and promote the YMCA mission, goals and objectives to the legislature, employees and volunteers. Grant Administration Ensure delivery of curriculum and all grant related metrics. Works with grant team to submit all required grant data in a timely manner and attend meetings with funders as requested by the Executive Director. Safety and Risk Management Ensures all Tampa Y program standards and best practices are implemented and followed. Applies YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to best practices, emergency procedures, medical and disciplinary situations and child abuse prevention. Ensures all program staff are properly trained and prepared for emergency situations. This includes implementing and following training requirements in addition to ensuring proper reporting of all incidents/accidents according to risk management procedures. Maintain proper records, including staff member certifications, staff member meetings, and trainings. Ensures staff members and volunteers are scheduled in accordance to safety and program needs and ensures all safety and program ratios are followed. Monitors daily program operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health & safety regulations. Uses discretion and independent judgment in handling confidential and sensitive information in connection with the Tampa Y program responsibilities and communication to/from leadership, associates, vendors, and guests. Assist in all areas, project teams, job tasks as assigned. Attend all conferences, trainings, meetings, and presentations as assigned.
Education/ Experience Required:
BA/BS in youth related field (Early Childhood Education, Elementary Educations), business/operational management or related field or equivalent experience required. Minimum of two years of experience working with school-aged children in afterschool, or similar youth related programs, with at least one year of supervisory experience required. Experience in grant funded programs or grant management preferred. Minimum of two-years experience in education and volunteer development Previous experience teaching or providing literacy instruction/tutoring required Proven results in increasing program quality and growth. Strong verbal and written skills, English proficiency is required Understanding of various learning styles Highly motivated with the consistent ability to meet or exceed goals, cultivate and retain program participants. Ability to quickly build rapport and develop effective relationships with program participants and volunteers Ability to understand, adapt to and interact with diverse people, teams, perspectives and cultures. Proficient in using email, Internet, and other PC-based applications with the ability to learn and adapt to new technology.
Certifications/Trainings Required:
Must obtain within 30 days of employment and then maintain current certifications in CPR, First Aid, AED and Oxygen Administration. Ability to successfully obtain Level II background clearance Maintain other required certifications as needed for program delivery.

Ability to sit and reach, and must be able to move around the work environment. Hear noises and distress signals in the program environment, including in the classroom and anywhere around the zone of responsibility. Must have flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Ability to lift and move a minimum of 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to work in a variety of environments, specifically those subject to extreme humidity/dampness, heat and cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high. This position requires reliable transportation and willing to travel, if needed. This position may require availability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
