JOB SUMMARY
The Teen Director leads, manages, directs, and monitors overall daily operations of a teen center with primary concern for safety, high-quality programming, driving optimal club experience within the teen center and service delivery/outcomes for youth, employee management, community and host site relationships, and financial well-being. The Teen Director will be responsible for assisting with recruiting and retaining staff as well as training and development. Maintains targeted membership and attendance while utilizing volunteers as necessary. The Teen Director reports directly to the Executive Director and may manage the club in the supervisor’s absence.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
Teen Center Leadership and Strategic Planning Front-line accountability for quality program delivery including core programs, new initiatives, summer programs, junior staff development programs, and outcome measurement systems. Trains, monitors, and develop staff so that programs are well delivered. Responsible for direct supervision of part-time teen center program staff and program volunteers. Evaluate opportunities to improve teen center operations; design and communicate strategies to implement improvements. Plans develops, evaluates, and oversees the implementation of arts, education, social recreation, health and physical education, computer center and specialty programs, activities, and services that prepare youth for success. Surveys teen center’s members’ interest in programs, and tracks member participation in programs, and outcomes. Works with the Executive Director to plan and implement changes to improve results. Develops daily/monthly/quarterly teen center program schedule and plans implementation with program staff. Promotes and markets programs to teen center members via meetings, announcements, bulletin boards, flyers, posted schedules, etc. Ensures designated and daily year-round and summer programs meet stated objectives, member needs, and interests, are organized and engaging, and result in high participation. Ensure programs are gender inclusive and are sensitive to cultural diversity. Plans, executes, and collects program data to support measures and report outcomes; prepares programs’ reports, as needed. Monitors program delivery, and works with program staff to plan and implement improvements. Communicate with club staff, members, and partner agencies to ensure understanding of program opportunities, schedules and plans when outside entities participate in program delivery. Participate in network-wide shared learning. Share experiences and learning with BGCMA organization through collaborative and teen opportunities. Plans special events and field trips, ensures they are properly supervised and releases and other paperwork completed. Helps plan and oversee implementation of opportunities to recognize teen center members. Works with the Executive Director to handle crisis situations and takes action to resolve conflicts, disputes and concerns of staff, club members, volunteers, and parents. Evaluation of programming activity and impact is regularly & consistently reviewed. Action steps are implemented, reviewed & updated regularly and program improvements are made as a regular process. Communicates, implements, and enforces the organization’s operational policies and procedures. Analyzes and reviews teen center’s membership levels and average daily attendance and develops and implements strategies to increase membership and ADA. Plans and takes actions required to obtain community and volunteer support. Teen Center Management and Development Functions as the primary liaison for the Teen Center. Collaborates with the Executive Director to determine staffing levels and hours that best support effective teen center operations and program delivery. Utilizes interns and volunteers to support teen center initiatives. Supervision, Membership & Attendance, Supplies Helps select teen center p/t staff required to deliver programs, helps evaluates staff’ performance and recommends discipline/discharge. Provides staff and volunteer orientation, training and oversight required for effective program delivery, reporting and outcomes. Trains and guides Program Staff to ensure an environment that promotes the physical, social and emotional well-being of youth, that incorporates guidance and discipline principles and that ensures understanding of designated programs. Monitors program areas and provides constructive feedback to staff with regard to program delivery and member guidance and discipline. Plans and implements opportunities to recognize program staff. Seeks guidance from Executive Director when handling crisis situations; takes action to resolve conflicts, disputes and/or concerns of staff, club members, or volunteers. Recommends and supports training of program staff. Maintains and increases teen membership and attendance through effective programming and works toward meeting club membership goals. Review and submit program supplies in a cost efficient and timely manner; ensures program staff has supplies required to run programs. Encourage and promote diversity awareness and diversity of staff, volunteers, and members. Teen Center Program and Services Ensures designated and daily year-round and summer programs are delivered, that programs meet stated objectives, member needs and interests, and are organized and engaging; monitors programs and collaborates with staff to plan and implement improvements. Plans and implements procedures to measure and report outcomes. Ensures BGCMA’s standards are communicated, understood and followed. Ensures teen center’s special events and field trips are properly planned and supervised. Collaborate and partner with Teen Services and Programs to ensure effective results driven programs are implemented and maintained. Collaborates with Executive Director to develop budget that supports teen center needs; monitors and controls expenditures and reports variances. Review and approved purchase request and submit to the Executive Director for approval and ensures expenditures considered costs and best value. Community Relations and Collaborative Partnerships Represent both the Teen center and BGCMA in their community ensuring that the interests of the youth are protected and supported. Collaborates with community partners to support teen center initiatives. Supports cross-functional initiatives across departments. Teen Center Facility and Property Plans and takes action to ensure teen program areas are safe, attractive, well-maintained and clean. Collaborate with the Executive Director to assess risk and implements programs and policies to minimize loss and exposure to loss. In partnership with the Executive Director, observes members and works with part-time staff to correct unsafe behaviors, to enforce safety rules and to communicate safety guidelines. Ensures emergency procedures are implemented and followed and takes actions to prevent accidents. In partnership with the Executive Director, communicates and enforces organization’s and partnership policies, procedures and standards with regard to upkeep, usage and maintenance of the teen center. Administrative Assumes the role of primary liaison to Teen Center for Support Center staff, responsible for communications and planning, delegating as appropriate. Ensures information and other data maintained on programs, membership, etc. are accurate and timely. Collaborates with Executive Director to develop budget that supports teen center needs; monitors and controls expenditures and reports variances. Assist the Executive Director in preparing accurate, timely paperwork required to hire, compensate, transfer, terminate and discipline employees. All other duties as assigned.
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
Education Bachelor’s degree preferred, Substitute education for experience, Six (6) + years of professional experience in Youth Development, Education, or related field. Experience Minimum of 2 years of work experience directly with teens, in a Boys & Girls Club or similar organization at a professional level where knowledge, experience, and competency in the role isacquired Skills Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and direct teen center operations. Ability to recruit, supervise, train, and retain key employees. Manage and maintain a facility and develop community support of teen center operations and programs. Ability to handle crisis and to resolve conflicts, disputes or concerns in the teen center among staff, teen center members, volunteers or parents. Knowledge of the mission, objectives, programs of non-profit organizations and youth development services, preferably Boys & Girls Club. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to motivate staff Strong oral, written and presentation communication skills Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Teen center part-time staff, Club staff, volunteers, and community groups. Community-based location that serves youth, families and community members daily. Frequent host site for organizational and communal meetings and events. Frequent contact with employees, community-based organizations, families, Club members, and community members. Some required travel to Club locations and community partners. Frequent deadlines. Atypical work schedule, including evening and weekend work. The position requires walking and climbing stairs; Light work, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently.
