Fetal and Infant Mortality Review Coordinator Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center 1121 Linden Street, Cape Girardeau, MO 63703
Funding:
100% grant-funded through May 31, 2026, with possible extension Position Summary The FIMR Coordinator leads and manages the Southeast Missouri District’s Fetal and Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) process, a community-driven initiative aimed at understanding and preventing fetal and infant deaths. The Southeast District includes 16 counties in southern Missouri. The coordinator oversees all aspects of program implementation—including case abstraction, family interviews, data analysis, team facilitation, and stakeholder engagement—to identify systemic issues and drive community-level change. This position requires exceptional interpersonal, analytical, and leadership skills, with a deep commitment to equity, cultural humility, and public health improvement. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Program Management
- Coordinate daily operations and long-term planning for the FIMR program
- Ensure all program deliverables are met, including case reviews, data collection, reporting, and stakeholder engagement
- Prepare and submit required monthly and annual reports to state and funding agencies
- Develop policies and procedures aligned with FIMR best practices and local needs
- Maintain and manage confidential data systems Case Identification and Abstraction
- Abstract vital statistics and medical records for fetal and infant death cases
- Conduct quality checks and ensure completeness and accuracy of data
- Develop clear, de-identified case summaries for review by the Case Review Team (CRT) Family Interviewing and Bereavement Support
- Locate, contact, and sensitively interview bereaved families (primarily mothers)
- Provide or refer for bereavement support as needed
- Integrate family perspectives into case reviews and summaries
- Maintain collaborative relationships with service providers to support family needs Case Review Team (CRT) Facilitation
- Recruit and sustain a diverse, multidisciplinary CRT
- Schedule and facilitate CRT meetings; prepare materials and provide logistical support
- Collaborate with the CRT to analyze case factors, identify service gaps, and develop recommendations
- Draft written findings and actionable recommendations for system improvement Community Action Team (CAT) and Stakeholder Engagement
- Support the CAT and/or MCHC task forces in translating CRT recommendations into action
- Participate in regional FIMR efforts
- Foster and maintain strong working relationships with key partners including health departments, hospitals, medical examiners, advocacy groups, and community organizations
- Represent the program to community stakeholders and at public health meetings
- Assist with community dashboard development, data dissemination, and public presentations General Duties
- Attend state and local FIMR trainings and meetings
- Collaborate in program evaluation and quality improvement initiatives
- Protect confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in all communications
- Serve as a public health emergency responder if needed
- Perform additional duties as assigned Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing, social work, public health, or related field
- Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in maternal/child health, pediatrics, obstetrics, neonatology, or a related clinical or public health field
- Experience with chart reviews, data abstraction, and/or home visiting
- Training or experience in cultural competency
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Experience with data analysis tools (e.g., SPSS, Excel-based dashboards)
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse teams and populations Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in public health, social work, nursing, or a related field
- 5-10 years of professional and administrative experience
- Clinical background in perinatal or neonatal care
- Experience with grant-funded programs and program evaluation
- Familiarity with continuous quality improvement (CQI) frameworks
- Experience in community organizing, systems-level advocacy, or interagency collaboration
