QUESTIONS
POSITION SUMMARY An employee in this position performs responsible technical and para-professional librarian work supporting the Harnett County Public Library System’s Technical Services Department. Work involves cataloging of materials in the NC Cardinal system, preparing materials to be ready for circulation, and repairing print materials. Additional duties include assisting in a variety of library services such as patron assistance and customer service, reader’s advisory, and organizing and shelving library materials.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION
Catalogs materials for placement in the library collection: downloads records, verifies and keys correct bibliographic information to library materials, assigns call numbers, adds protective jacket or case, applies barcodes, book plates, and pockets, inserts security devices, stamps ownership and distributes processed materials to appropriate departments and sites.
Assess items for damage and wear, and determines the appropriate course of action, replacement, repair, or permanent withdrawal.
Maintains inventory of department equipment and supplies.
Confirms accuracy of materials ordered and received. Maintains serials collection; assures receipt of materials and contacts vendors if materials are not received. Assists with the removal and repurposing of discarded materials.
Provides assistance to patrons in person, by e-mail, or by phone; assists users in finding materials and information; instructs patrons in use of on-line catalogue, copier, and Internet; and answers a variety of reference questions using Library materials and Internet access.
Maintains collections of serial materials; assures receipt of materials; and contacts vendors if materials are not received.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK
Associate’s degree in library science, information science, or a related field;
One (1) year of related work or volunteer library experience preferably as an employee; Or equivalent education and/or experience; and
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
Possession of Certificates of Achievement for Item Cataloging Assessment and Bibliographical Cataloging Assessment issued by NC State Library Cardinal Consortium desired depending on assignment. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and
ABILITIES
Knowledge of books, materials, equipment, and resources in area of assignment
Knowledge of the operation principles and practices of a public library and practices of library science.
Knowledge of the use of computer systems including on-line systems, computer software, printers, and other peripheral hardware.
Skill in providing customer service.
Skill in communicating, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to be creative at work.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to use all assigned equipment with appropriate skill.
Ability to plan and coordinate successful programs and services relating to assigned collection of materials.
Ability to assess and assist patrons of all ages and demographic groups.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, volunteers, officials, and the general public.
Ability to utilize a variety of systems and methods to acquire materials or provide services requested by patrons.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to perform medium work frequently exerting up to 30 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects; and occasionally requiring to exert up to 50 pounds of force to move objects. This work also involves the physical abilities of balancing, crawling, crouching, grasping, handling, perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, kneeling, lifting, using mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, performing repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, expressing ideas by the spoken word, and walking. An incumbent must also possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, to operate a computer terminal, for extensive reading; for visual inspection of books and materials at distances close to the eyes, and for use of measurement devices.
