- The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) is seeking a Lead for Incubatenergy Labs (IEL), an industry-leading technology demonstration program that connects early-stage startup companies with energy companies to execute rapid, proof-of-concept demonstrations in order to test and validate new technologies and use cases in the energy space.
Entering the eight year of operations, IEL has established a durable platform for technology demonstrations aimed at improving safety, reliability, affordability, and resilience for IEL members and participants.
- The IEL Lead is a strategic connector, requiring a multi-facilitated skillset and experience to ensure IEL delivers program activities and demonstrations in a valuable, timely and innovative manner.
IEL is an established program with a strong base of support and results and the Lead will be instrumental to growing the value and reach of the program through expansion of members and partners, broadening the geographic reach or participation, and constant evaluation of the most effective scope and scale for demonstrations and results. EPRI is seeking an experienced leader who brings knowledge and expertise in startup incubation/commercialization, technology testing and demonstration, and electric industry structures and innovative models.
- The Lead will provide leadership and accountability for the program, working collaboratively with EPRI subject-matter experts and member advisors who participate in the scouting, technical review, demonstration design and execution, and information-sharing that is the hallmark of the IEL program.
The Lead is a highly visible position requiring a wide capability-set coupled with a strong foundation of understanding on energy industry operating profiles, business models and value chains, technology development and demonstration, and/or startup commercialization.
- Key Responsibilities
- Execute the IEL program strategy to ensure delivery aligns with program objectives and member goals
- Monitor key performance indicators and track progress towards overall program objectives, ensuring mitigating steps are taken in a strategic and timely manner
- Provide leadership and oversight for key aspects of program execution including challenge definition, startup scouting/sourcing, technical review/due diligence, demonstration scoping, and demonstration results sharing
- Establish, foster and maintain strong relationships and rapport with program members, partners, EPRI technical staff and startup participants to ensure program goals are achieved optimally
- Ensure sales & marketing activities are effective at communicating value to new and existing participants through clear and targeted value propositions
- Continuously evaluate strategies and tactics to increase startup awareness and participation through channel partnerships and scouting activities
- Leverage EPRI’s deep technical expertise, R D knowledge and staff to ensure technical evaluation and due diligence activities are delivered in a quality and timely manner
- Partner with
EPRI R D
sectors and leaders to identify promising areas for technology demonstration that aligned with EPRI, member and overall industry objectives
- Explore avenues for follow-on development and commercialization activities post-demonstration aligned with R D priorities and EPRI’s mission
- Lead the strategy and execution of events and activities that support program objectives and ensure rapid and valuable execution of milestones, including an annual Pitch Event and Demo Day
- Ensure program communications are effectively managed to build awareness, transparency and ease of information sharing

Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- Masters or Ph.D. in a business and/or technical domain preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- 8-10+ years of experience in one, or a combination, of the following areas:
- Startup incubation, acceleration or commercialization
- Technology design, development and demonstration
- Energy utility technology integration, R D and innovation
- Venture investment and/or market analysis
- Research and Development within a technical domain relevant to IEL and the electric utility industry
- Demonstrated project management capabilities in managing a project portfolio
- Demonstrated budget, finance and accounting capabilities at the project and program-level
- Excellent verbal and written communication capabilities
- Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally and lead matrixed project teams
- Preferred experience with direct management of individuals and teams
- The salary range for this position is $140,000 USD to $155,000 USD annually.
This salary range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on various factors, including without limitation applicant’s education, experience, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. The salary may also be adjusted based on applicant’s geographic location. This role is eligible to participate in EPRI’s annual incentive program. The amount of incentive varies and is subject to the terms and conditions of the plan. This role is eligible to participate in EPRI’s standard employee benefit programs, which currently include the following: medical, dental, vision, 401k, STD/LTD and paid family leave, life and accident insurance, paid time off (flexible vacation, sick leave, and holiday pay). EPRI participates in E-Verify, an online system operated jointly by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration (SSA). EPRI uses the system to check the work status of new hires by comparing information from the employee’s I-9 form against SSA and Department of Homeland Security databases.
