Job Summary:

The Lead Manager of Alternative Education and Student Mentorship is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing alternative education programs and student mentorship initiatives. This role ensures that students who require non-traditional educational pathways receive the necessary academic support, personal development resources, and mentorship to succeed. The Lead Manager collaborates with educators, counselors, and community stakeholders to provide individualized learning opportunities, behavioral interventions, and mentorship programs that promote student success. The individual will also be the initial point of contact at the district level for parent concerns at the secondary levels (6th-12th grades).

Key Responsibilities:
Alternative Education Program Management and Oversight:

Recommending the assignment of students for alternative education programs tailored to meet the needs of students requiring non-traditional learning environments.
Collaborates with the Executive Director to recommend to the Superintendent student assignment to an alternative educational setting or Long Term Suspension (Expulsion) process and manage Hearings
Serve on the Tar River Academy committee that reviews student applications for acceptance into the Alternate Placements including Evening Academy
Ensure compliance with district, state, and federal regulations regarding alternative education and student discipline.
Research and develop credit recovery programs, independent study options, and career-readiness initiatives.
Assess program effectiveness through data analysis, student performance tracking, and stakeholder feedback.

Student Mentorship & Support Services:

Continue the development of “The Village” mentorship/liaison program that connects students with faculty, staff, or community mentors to support academic and personal growth.
Provide support and supervision to the school level managers of “The Village” mentorship program.
Coordinate annual educational field trips to colleges and universities, annual career fair and leadership summit, and organize the annual end of the year banquet.
Implement conflict resolution, leadership development, and peer mentorship training for The Village staff, students, and mentors.
Assist in creating a supportive and inclusive environment that promotes the academic, behavior, mental, and emotional growth of students.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement:

Serve as the primary liaison between schools, families, and community organizations regarding alternative education and mentorship programs.
Collaborate with community partners, Communities In Schools (CIS), and various statewide agencies to support the needs of the students enrolled in the mentorship programs.
Develop partnerships with local businesses, nonprofits, and higher education institutions to provide students with mentorship and internship opportunities.
Recruits and provides training and support for approved mentors.
Communicate program goals, updates, and outcomes to district leadership, school staff, and stakeholders.

Administration & Compliance:

Ensure that school staff maintain accurate records of student participation, progress, and program outcomes.
Develop policies and procedures for program implementation and evaluation.
Prepare reports and recommendations for school and district leadership.
Ensure adherence to district policies regarding student discipline, attendance, and alternative education pathways.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & EDUCATION

Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Knowledge of alternative education models, restorative justice practices, and student support strategies.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Ability to work with diverse student populations, including at-risk youth.
Proficiency in data analysis and program evaluation.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in trauma-informed education and social-emotional learning.
Background in behavioral intervention strategies.
Familiarity with local and state education policies related to alternative education.
Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Superintendent;

Required Education & Experience:
Education:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field.

Experience:

5+ years in education, student services, or program leadership, with experience in alternative education or mentorship programs preferred.
Other qualifications as the Superintendent and Board deem appropriate.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of public relations and communications programs and/or marketing campaign strategies; Considerable knowledge of the principles of supervision, organization and administration; Considerable knowledge of the ethical guidelines applicable to the position as outlined by professional organizations and/or federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations; General knowledge of school system personnel policies; Skill in counseling and developing staff; Ability to plan, develop, implement effective programs and systems; Ability to accurately interpret state and federal regulations and school policies;
Ability to use common office machines and popular computer-driven word processing, spreadsheet and file maintenance programs;
Ability to maintain complete and accurate records and statistics and to develop meaningful reports from that information;
Ability to develop and administer budgets;
