Academically or Intellectually Gifted (AIG)

Coordinator Reports To:

Director of Teaching & Learning Position Overview The AIG Coordinator oversees all aspects of the Academically or Intellectually Gifted (AIG) Program for Northampton County Schools. This role ensures the effective development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the district’s AIG plan in alignment with North Carolina AIG Program Standards and local board policies. The coordinator serves as a leader, collaborator, and advocate for gifted education, ensuring equitable access and high-quality services for all identified students. Key Responsibilities Program Leadership and Compliance Guide, plan, develop, implement, revise, and monitor the local AIG program and plan in accordance with NC AIG Program Standards and Article 9B legislation. Ensure consistency and equity in screening, referral, and identification processes across all schools in the district, including underrepresented populations. Maintain and analyze student identification and service data in PowerSchool and other systems. Internally audit AIG records to ensure compliance and fidelity of implementation. Oversee the use of state and local funds allocated for the AIG program. Collaboration and Communication Collaborate with classroom teachers, AIG specialists, counselors, and administrators to enrich, extend, and accelerate curriculum for gifted learners. Serve as a liaison between the district, parents, community partners, and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). Communicate AIG program policies, procedures, and opportunities to all stakeholders, including parents and the community. Participate in district-level instructional and MTSS teams to ensure integration of AIG services with district priorities. Professional Development and Support Organize and deliver ongoing professional development for teachers and staff involved in the AIG program. Support teachers in differentiating instruction and implementing best practices for gifted learners. Stay current with research and trends in gifted education and share relevant information with staff. Program Evaluation and Continuous Improvement Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of AIG programs and services, using multiple data sources to inform improvements. Seek and incorporate feedback from students, families, teachers, and other stakeholders. Lead the required evaluation and revision process of the local AIG plan. Additional Duties Coordinate all AIG referral, screening, and identification procedures. Oversee the development of differentiated curriculum and enrichment opportunities for AIG students. Represent the district at local, regional, and state meetings related to gifted education. Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee. Required Qualifications Education and Licensure Valid North Carolina Teaching License. North Carolina AIG (Academically or Intellectually Gifted) add-on licensure. This may be obtained by completing a state-approved AIG licensure program (typically 12 semester hours of coursework) at an accredited institution or by passing the Gifted Education Praxis examination. Minimum of five years of successful classroom teaching experience. Master’s degree in education preferred. Knowledge and Skills In-depth knowledge of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and AIG Program Standards. Experience with data analysis, program evaluation, and compliance monitoring. Strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Ability to plan and deliver professional development for adult learners. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders and promote equity in gifted education. Licensure Requirements (NC DPI) Hold a valid North Carolina Standard Professional Educator’s License. Obtain the AIG (Academically or Intellectually Gifted) add-on license by completing a state-approved AIG licensure program (typically 12 semester hours of graduate coursework) at an accredited North Carolina institution or by earning a qualifying score on the Gifted Education Praxis examination.
