Job Description:

Roger Williams University seeks a Director for its High School Marine Biology Program, a summer program designed to provide hands-on marine science experiences to high school students. The Director will oversee the day-to-day operations of the program, ensuring smooth execution of activities, coordinating with faculty members leading the academic components, and supervising resident assistants (RAs) who manage residential and social aspects of the program. The Director reports directly to the Dean of the School of Social and Natural Sciences and plays a critical role in ensuring a safe, engaging, and enriching experience for participants. This is a temporary, short-term position that spans the duration of the program, which consists of five, seven-day sessions with 28-hour breaks in between each session. The start date is June 30th, and the program runs July 6th – August 9th. Meals are included

Key Responsibilities:

Oversee and coordinate all logistical aspects of the program, ensuring smooth daily operations.
Serve as the primary point of contact for faculty leading academic activities and provide support as needed.
Supervise and support Resident Assistants (RAs), who are marine biology majors familiar with RWU’s Marine Biology programming.
Foster a positive and inclusive environment for both students and staff.
Ensure adherence to university policies, safety regulations, and program guidelines.

Work Schedule & Compensation:

The program consists of five, seven-day sessions, with a 28-hour break between each session.
The position requires full-time availability during program sessions, including evenings and overnight on-call duties.
Compensation will be based on experience and is commensurate with the temporary nature of the position. Handle scheduling, communication, and problem-solving for any issues that arise during program sessions.
Act as a liaison between the program, the Dean of the School of Social and Natural Sciences, and other university departments.
Assist in managing student behavior and addressing any concerns related to student well-being.
Oversee program logistics, including housing arrangements, meals, transportation, and emergency procedures.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Education, or a related field.
Experience working with middle school or high school students in formal or informal educational settings.
Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and respond effectively to unexpected challenges.

Preferred:

Experience directing or coordinating summer camps, residential programs, or academic enrichment programs.
Prior leadership or supervisory experience, particularly overseeing student staff members.
Familiarity with marine science education and field-based learning experiences. At the University’s discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be excepted where the candidate can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the University, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
