Vice President of Design Job Summary We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Civil Engineer to lead and oversee complex civil engineering projects. This role requires a strategic thinker with technical expertise, leadership acumen, and a commitment to innovation. The Principal Civil Engineer will manage the design, planning, and execution of large-scale infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with technical standards, regulatory requirements, and client expectations. This position will also provide mentorship to junior engineers and contribute to the long-term growth of our engineering division. Key Responsibilities Lead and manage engineering projects from inception to completion, ensuring timely and budget-conscious delivery. Take ownership of technical aspects, including design, analysis, and quality control. Provide strategic oversight to ensure project objectives align with business and client needs. Design & Analysis Oversee the design and technical evaluation of civil infrastructure such as roads, bridges, utilities, and drainage systems. Utilize advanced engineering software for structural, hydraulic, and geotechnical analyses. Ensure designs are efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable. Client & Stakeholder Management Serve as the primary technical liaison for clients and stakeholders. Effectively communicate project progress, challenges, and solutions. Manage client relationships to maintain satisfaction and foster long-term partnerships. Regulatory Compliance & Standards Ensure all projects comply with local, state, and federal regulations. Stay updated on engineering codes, environmental laws, and safety standards. Secure necessary permits and approvals for construction projects. Mentorship & Team Development Provide guidance and professional development to junior engineers and technical staff. Foster a culture of innovation and continuous learning within the engineering team. Budget & Resource Management Develop and manage project budgets, ensuring cost efficiency. Oversee resource allocation and monitor project expenditures. Implement adjustments as needed to maintain financial and operational viability. Risk Management Identify and mitigate potential risks associated with environmental, financial, or schedule-related issues. Develop contingency plans and proactively address challenges. Collaboration Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including architects, construction managers, and external consultants. Facilitate seamless communication among all project stakeholders. Innovation & Continuous Improvement Stay abreast of emerging engineering trends, technologies, and best practices. Introduce innovative solutions to enhance project efficiency and sustainability. Documentation & Reporting Prepare detailed engineering reports, project documentation, and technical presentations. Maintain accurate records in accordance with company and industry standards. Qualifications & Skills Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field. A Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or Transportation Engineering is preferred. Licensing & Certification Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Alabama. Additional certifications such as LEED, PMP, or similar credentials are a plus. Experience Demonstrated success in managing large-scale infrastructure projects (roads, bridges, utilities, site development, etc.). Strong expertise in engineering principles, materials, and project management . Extensive experience with AutoCAD, Civil 3D , and other modeling or analysis software . Technical Skills Advanced proficiency in engineering design software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit). Expertise in structural analysis, hydrology, geotechnical engineering, and transportation planning . Strong understanding of environmental regulations and sustainability practices . Familiarity with project management tools (Microsoft Project, Primavera, etc.). Leadership & Communication Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and guide multidisciplinary teams . Excellent verbal and written communication skills for engaging clients, stakeholders, and team members. Ability to translate complex technical information into clear, actionable insights. Problem-Solving & Analytical Skills Strong analytical skills and the ability to solve complex engineering problems . Capability to anticipate risks and develop proactive solutions . Preferred Qualifications Experience in sustainable design practices , including green infrastructure and low-impact development (LID) . Familiarity with construction management, contract administration, and contractor coordination . Knowledge of geographic information systems (GIS) or spatial analysis tools .
