About this Opportunity Brunswick County is currently accepting applications for a Community Enforcement Officer to join our Planning Department. Working under limited supervision, the Community Enforcement Officer is responsible for monitoring and enforcing compliance with the Brunswick County Solid Waste Ordinance and Unified Development Ordinance.

Work includes:

Coordinating enforcement activities and court case preparation with legal and law enforcement personnel. Maintaining cases and keeping complaint records. Identifying violations to zoning and development codes and ordinances, gathering evidence as appropriate, and discussing violations and corrective action with property owners, residents, and other interested parties. Preparing zoning reports, variance reports, ordinance amendments and special reports for Planning Commission meetings as needed. Responding to citizen inquiries concerning potential violations of Brunswick County ordinances as well as questions, complaints and/or requests for information. Performing site inspections for issuance of certification of zoning compliance. The Community Enforcement Officer performs a variety of administrative duties in support of enforcement work and collaborates regularly with property owners, contractors, developers, and the general public. The Community Enforcement Officer reports directly to the Planning Director. Education and Experience Associate’s degree with coursework emphasis in law enforcement, zoning law, or a related field supplemented by two (2) to three (3) years of experience working with zoning ordinances and regulations; OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Valid North Carolina or South Carolina driver’s license required. Physical Requirements Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including a computer, copier, car, facsimile machine, calculator, etc. and other tools required of Community Enforcement Officers. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to stoop, climb, crawl, bend and stand for periods of time. Must be able to lift objects of up to 40 pounds. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for sedentary work.
