Job Description The Neighborhood Center Director at Kiwanis Park plays a pivotal role in the planning, organization, and management of programs, activities, and operations at Kiwanis Park, either directly or through subordinate staff. This position requires dynamic community engagement and outreach to develop, implement, and promote programs catering to diverse age groups and populations. Additionally, the Center Director supervises part-time staff, a contracted custodian, and volunteers to ensure the effective delivery of services.

No two days are the same, so the ability to prioritize tasks, adapt to changing circumstances, and communicate effectively is essential. Flexibility is required to be available for staff meetings, facility events, and providing coverage to part-time staff.

This lively park features a neighborhood center, baseball field and multipurpose fields, outdoor basketball court, playground, picnic shelter, and a popular dog run connected to the Crabtree Creek Greenway Trail. The neighborhood center is a welcoming hub, open six days a week, offering two versatile meeting rooms, one equipped with a kitchenette, that are perfect for programs, events, and community gatherings. Our dedicated staff not only support Kiwanis Park but also manage nearby Fallon Park, ensuring both spaces are thriving, inclusive environments for all to enjoy.

Work Hours:

This position works at a community center that is open six days a week, Monday

  • Saturday; 9:00 am
  • 8:00 pm.

Flexibility is required to be available for staff meetings, facility events, and providing coverage to part-time staff.

Duties and Responsibilities Program, Event, and League Coordination:

Plan, organize, and manage staff or lead programs, events, camps and leagues tailored to diverse age groups and interests, promoting community engagement and an inclusive, active environment.

Staff and Volunteer Leadership:

Recruit and manage a team comprising of part-time staff, a contracted custodian, and volunteers, ensuring effective collaboration and performance.

Community Service:

Deliver excellent customer service to patrons and the community, serving as a primary representative of the department at public meetings and assisting with resolving patron concerns, including complaints, refund requests, transfers, and other special situations.

Operational Management:

Coordinate daily operations and scheduling, facility maintenance, assisting with set-up and break-down of spaces, rentals and resource allocation, to ensure smooth and efficient functioning.

Marketing & Outreach:

Develop and execute strategies to promote programs and events, utilizing various channels to reach a broad audience.

Budget Oversight:

Managing the center’s budget, including tracking and reporting, and identifying opportunities for cost-effective solutions.

Typical Qualifications Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Parks and Recreation or directly related field and one year of related experience OR An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing and Certifications:

Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
CPR/First Aid/AED/EPI certification, or the ability to obtain within 60 days

Preferred Qualifications:

Certified Parks and Recreation Professional; The City of Raleigh additionally offers support in obtaining this certification

Additional Information Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Programming administration, management and direct supervision
Supervisory techniques for organizing, prioritizing, assigning and monitoring tasks, as well as coaching and leading team members
Community engagement outreach to build and foster effective and professional relationships with individuals and community organizations
Qualitative and quantitative research methods, with strong critical thinking and analytical skills
Standard budget practices for interpreting and reporting financial information and statistics
Creating and preparing original reports, documents and presentations with clarity and precision
Committed to providing excellent customer service, including utilizing judgement in determining strategies to handle a variety of situations
Marketing strategies, incorporating best practices, current trends, and innovative technologies

ADA and Other Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium Work:

Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with frequent exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.); frequent exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood and other body fluids); frequent exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting and movement restrictions; and moderate exposure intense noise or travel.
