The Director of Programs and Education will work with the Executive Director to reopen the historic living history village and develop a strategic educational and interpretive plan. The position will be responsible for the development, delivery, and evaluation of education programs for visiting school groups and offsite classroom visits; supervising interpretive staff members and volunteers; and assist with managing and caring for the museum’s collections. This is an exempt, full-time position which includes benefits. Work schedules may require expanded hours, flexibility, and weekend work as well as required attendance at all major Historic Westville events and programs. Historic Westville is a living history museum that conserves both the material and the intangible culture of the nineteenth century. As the state’s earliest major experiment in living history, Westville conserves and perpetuates the work skills of antebellum west Georgia. The historic buildings and collection were moved from their original location in Lumpkin to Columbus, Georgia, and the site features interpreters in period wardrobe demonstrating early crafts including blacksmithing, split-white-oak basketmaking, cotton weaving, quilting, potting, hearth cooking, and more.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in museum education, education, history, or related field from an accredited institution.
  • Two or more years of experience developing and/or implementing education programs with a preference for developing and delivering participatory experiences for students, culturally relevant curriculum development, and communicating effectively with diverse audiences having different levels of knowledge.
  • Experience with and knowledge of museum education techniques and resources.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a familiarity with 19th century southern history.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Work with the Executive Director to ensure education programs fit within the overall interpretation of the museum.
  • Supervise, train, and support museum interpretive staff, educators, and volunteers conducting the day-to-day programs of the site.
  • Research, develop and implement education programs for school groups, youth groups, and community groups.
  • Manage school and group tours at the museum, community and school-based outreach programs, and special community programs.
  • Maintain cordial, cooperative, and professional working relations with coworkers, supervisors and the public.
  • Other duties as assigned
