Job Description
Public Works Director 3.3 3.3 out of 5 stars Dawson, GA 39842 JOB SUMMARY The Public Works Director is responsible for overseeing the planning, coordination, and execution of all functions within the Public Works Department for the City of Dawson. This includes supervision of facilities maintenance, street maintenance, natural gas, and water/sewer operations. The Director ensures compliance with safety and regulatory standards, manages department personnel, and supports infrastructure development and maintenance to promote effective public service delivery.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Plan, manage, and direct the daily operations of the Public Works Department including streets, water, natural gas, and facility maintenance. Supervise and provide leadership to two lead workers (supervisors) and oversee staff assignments and performance. Develop and manage departmental budgets and capital improvement plans in coordination with the City Manager. Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local safety and environmental regulations. Review and approve operational reports, maintenance records, and service logs. Evaluate departmental policies and procedures and recommend improvements. Serve as liaison to contractors, engineers, and utility service providers. Coordinate emergency response and repair efforts for public infrastructure failures. Respond to citizen inquiries and service requests with professionalism and efficiency. Perform related duties as assigned by the City Manager.
ADA MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Physical Ability:
Must be able to perform site visits, operate standard office equipment, lift up to 50 lbs, and occasionally perform manual labor.
Sensory Requirements:
Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively, interpret data, maps, and plans, and maintain attention to detail.
Environmental Factors:
Work involves both office and field environments, including exposure to noise, weather, dust, fumes, and hazardous conditions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED required; associate or bachelor’s degree in management, engineering, construction, or related field preferred. Five or more years of experience in public works or utility operations, with at least two years in a leadership or supervisory role. Knowledge of municipal infrastructure systems and public works best practices. Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
Valid Georgia Driver’s License. Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
In-depth knowledge of public works, natural gas, water systems, and facility maintenance. Proficient in budgeting, project management, and regulatory compliance. Ability to manage personnel and resolve operational issues. Skilled in interdepartmental coordination and public communication. This class specification should not be interpreted as all inclusive.
