The Town of Salem, NH, is seeking an innovative and experienced Director of Public Works (officially Director of Municipal Services) to join our leadership team and help drive the future of our dynamic and growing community. This is a pivotal, high-impact leadership role—ideal for a results-oriented professional ready to oversee and modernize core municipal operations. As the Director of Municipal Services, you will oversee key divisions including Public Works, Engineering, Water, and Sewer, while leading major infrastructure initiatives and supporting several key town committees. You will be instrumental in executing a broad portfolio of projects—supported by an aggressive budget, including a recently approved $38 million bond for a new Police Station. This role is about more than maintaining operations—it’s about shaping the future of Salem. Key Responsibilities:

Oversee the full operation of Public Works, Engineering, Water, Sewer, Highway, Cemetery, Fleet Maintenance, Facilities, and more. Lead major infrastructure and capital improvement projects. Supervise, mentor, and develop department heads and teams. Support and modernize town operations with a focus on innovation and results. The Director of Municipal Services is a critical member of the Town’s senior leadership team, reporting directly to the Town Manager. The Director is responsible for the overall planning, direction, and operation of the Town’s Municipal Services Department. The Director plays a leading role in delivering high-quality services to the public while supporting Salem’s ongoing investment in infrastructure, innovation, and operational excellence.

Key Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Engineering, or related field required. Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible experience in public works, public administration, or a related field, with at least 5 years in a senior management role. Proven success in strategic planning, long-range infrastructure management, operations and capital budgeting, performance evaluation, and organizational leadership. Strong expertise in modern public works management, project delivery, and public sector best practices. Exceptional leadership and people management skills, with the ability to motivate, supervise, and develop high-performing teams. Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred, but not required.
