Commensurate with experience and qualifications. The City of Newark is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Planner to join its Planning & Zoning Office. The Senior Planner will work under the guidance of the Planning Director and the Zoning Officer on land use, zoning, and community development initiatives citywide. This position involves leading complex planning projects, conducting site and development reviews, engaging with diverse stakeholders, and preparing technical and policy reports to inform Newark’s growth and revitalization.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist with planning studies related to land use, zoning, economic development, and community revitalization.
Review development applications and site plans for compliance with Newark’s zoning ordinance, master plan, and relevant state and federal regulations.
Conduct spatial, demographic, and economic analyses using GIS and other planning tools; prepare publication-quality maps, charts, and presentations.
Advise city officials, boards, and the public on planning, zoning, and land use matters.
Draft amendments to zoning ordinances and contribute to updates of the City’s Master Plan and other policy documents.
Prepare written reports, staff recommendations, and oral presentations for the Planning Board, Zoning Board, City Council, and community groups.
Participate in public meetings, workshops, and outreach initiatives to engage residents and stakeholders in the planning process.
Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including urban designers, transportation planners, and housing specialists, to advance citywide initiatives.
Maintain accurate records, files, and documentation of planning activities and decisions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Architecture, Public Policy, or a closely related field. A Master’s degree in Planning or related discipline is preferred.
At least two (2) years of professional experience in municipal, county, regional, or state planning.
Experience with GIS (ArcGIS or similar), data analysis, and map production required.
Strong knowledge of New Jersey Municipal Land Use Law and local planning procedures preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; experience preparing and delivering public presentations.
Ability to work effectively with city staff, elected officials, community organizations, and the public.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; knowledge of graphic design or data visualization software is a plus.
New Jersey Professional Planner license or AICP certification is highly desirable; ability to obtain within one year may be considered.
Valid New Jersey driver’s license may be required. ‍
