Under the supervision of the Operations Supervisor, the Bus Operator safely operates a bus on a predetermined, assigned route according to time schedules, charts, and special services in and around the city of Jacksonville. The duties of this position may vary based on the route, equipment, and clientele.
Essential Job Functions:
Operate a bus in a safe and efficient manner as required by JTA and governmental regulations and applicable traffic laws. Provide professional and courteous customer service. Follow all safety rules, work procedures, and instructions and strictly adhere to time schedules. Provide information about connecting routes, schedules, fares and other general information to passengers in a courteous and helpful manner. Assist passengers who need special assistance or are disabled. Operate disability access lifts and ramps for wheelchairs. Monitor fare and ticket collection and verify appropriate passes are used. Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned bus. Complete accident, incident, and/or other reports, including reports of mechanical difficulties, of assigned bus. Assist with 911 emergency situations as directed. Communicate via radio with dispatch, supervisors and, as needed, emergency vehicles. Perform other duties of similar nature as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
A minimum of 3 years of experience in a fast paced, customer centric environment
Must be 21 years old or older
Valid Florida Driver’s License.
Clean driving record: Cannot have 3 or more traffic violations in the last 5 years or may have 3 years without any traffic violations.
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous commercial driving experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of Florida traffic laws and safe driving practices.
Must be able to use good judgment and carryout instructions given by Supervisors or dispatch personnel via radio. Must be able to keep accurate records and communicate clearly and concisely via a radio handset.
Knowledge of or ability to learn the rules and regulations of the public transit system. Skill in the operation of passenger buses.
Ability to effectively handle emergency situations and difficult customer interactions that may occur while performing duties.
Ability to learn the City’s geography. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to assist passengers in a courteous manner.
Work Environment/Physical Requirements:
The Bus Operator must be willing to work nights, holidays, weekends, split shifts, split days off, and any hours assigned. Work may also require exposure to fumes and vapors and performance of tasks in extreme/varying road and/or weather conditions. Must be able to lift at least 25lbs and push objects such as doors, windows, emergency hatches, wheelchairs and wheelchair lifts. Must be able to repetitively bend, kneel, squat, and twist safely.
