Description:

The Transportation Coordinator is responsible for creating a safe, nurturing, and supportive environment for children during bus transportation. This position interacts with children to promote learning and safety, manages behavior on the bus, and assists with safety protocols in collaboration with bus drivers, teachers, and the Program Manager. The Transportation Coordinator also maintains accurate documentation and complies with federal, state, local, and internal policies and regulations.

Job Responsibilities Guiding and Interacting with

Children:

Interacts with children in a warm, nurturing manner and provides teachable moments on the bus to support learning and safety education curriculum and practices. Manages behavior management on the bus. Ensures the timely and safe transition of all children between the classroom and public school bus transportation.

Observation, Assessment, and Documentation:

Conducts regular child attendance checks during boarding, the ride, and upon exiting the bus. Completes and maintains required passenger log attendance forms and follows procedures according to program policies. Completes and maintains required bus routes as needed. Coordinates and updates bus routes. Updates bus passenger logs in accordance with EEC regulations. Maintains accurate records in accordance with federal, state, and local requirements.

Regulations, Requirements, and Policies:

Ensures the safeguarding of confidential, personally identifying, and/or sensitive information related to staff, children, and families. Adheres to Berkshire County Head Start Protection and Safety of Children and Positive Guidance policies when managing child behaviors. Ensures children are only released to authorized adults as outlined by agency policy.

Health and Safety:

Acts as the lead staff in carrying out Emergency Bus Evacuations three times a year and safety procedures as needed. Installs and removes child safety restraints on the bus daily, ensuring that all children are properly secured before the bus moves. Maintains inventory of the child safety restraints and reports malfunctions or equipment issues. Models and teaches safety procedures for boarding and exiting the bus. Completes two bus tags for children riding the bus, one for assigned seating and the other one for the child to wear transitioning to the classroom and to wear transitioning back onto the bus. Completes and maintains a seating chart for children riding the bus as needed.

Professionalism:

Communicates respectfully and effectively with all parents, children, and staff. Assists substitute teachers and bus drivers, providing guidance on procedures, directions, and materials. Actively participates in required professional development and training sessions; seeks to improve knowledge and skills. Demonstrates enthusiasm and alignment with Berkshire County Head Start’s mission, vision, and values.
